The green, gold and white in this beautiful pounamu are like the colours of here Te Tai o Poutini less than a month from Koanga the Spring Equinox. The Kōwhai are flowering, there’s daffs and lambs, sunshine and the new growth green of everything. These are gorgeous quite big carvings from Robert Singer - the Pikorua 8 cm long and the Hei matau 9.5 cm. They would be super special for a couple -I can imagine these being worn on a Wedding day 💚✨🤍My heart feels koanga ngākau -joy when I see them✨

Andy Ruskin has beautifully carved stars into this cobble of Pounamu. Looks like last month when Venus and Jupiter looked so close together from our view on Earth. Isn’t it great to watch the stars. It looks like on Friday here on the West Coast the skies will be clear to see Matariki in the pre dawn sky. The cluster of stars will be low on the North Eastern horizon. Thanks for teaching us so much about Matariki and all the ✨. There’s going to be a Market day organised by a hard working team of volunteers with live musics and lots of fun on Friday at the Pounamu Pathway. Wrap up warm and enjoy the community Matariki festivity. We are having a mid Winter break and closing Friday and Sunday this week . Open Saturday and Monday 10-2. We will enjoy hearing what you did for our newest public holiday ✨🌟✨Mānawatia a Matariki✨🌟✨May all the blessings and goodness of Matariki be bestowed upon you.

A beautiful collection all from the same Kawakawa Pounamu. When this stone is held to the light it has a flowering of chatoyant white shimmering in some parts. In the cross this chatoyancy looks like a phosphorescent Pounamu wave reaching the forested Coast shoreline. Congratulations Susan Wallace for being ordained as the first wahine Maori to serve as bishop for Te Hui Amorangi ki Te Waipounamu(The Maori Anglican Church).
In the Roimata (the tear drop )the chatoyancy travels down like river streams coming down a mountain valley. To me the indent on both sides is like a pool or a source or even a portal into strength and healing that comes from our inevitable travels through grief. The earrings are from this special Kawakawa Pounamu too and are all available on the website -

Kārearea the Falcon endemic to Aotearoa. Nikita Stevenson has perfectly captured the fierce agility of Kārearea in this Pounamu carving. Kārearea can fly 200 km an hour when chasing its prey. It nests in the forest around home in scrapes high in the epiphytes or in the old logs of the Kahikatea and Totara. Sometimes we marvel at this speedster hunting from the Taramakau terrace trees hurtling across the river. 5000- 8000 birds are alive so very precious -anybody ever been dive bombed or swooped at by a Kārearea protecting its young ? I love hearing their unique kek kek kek call and chitter exchange. I read today to hear a Kārearea call on a fine day is a forecast for rain the next and to hear a Kārearea call on a wet day is a forecast for fine weather the following day - looks like beautiful rainforest rain again tomorrow then 💚

Just back from Ōkārito where I photographed this Koru. The colours of this Pounamu seem so much like the magical lagoon sanctuary Ōkārito
They both are a mandala -a spiral whirl of Mountain, Forest with the rata vine flowering. Harakeke edged Lagoon, their shiny black seeds drifting on the shifting currents and settling into the earth. The river birds, Kōtuku, S**g, Oyster Catcher fishing in the between tides stillness. Ocean meets Sky in orange and red splashed sunrises and sets and between all this and so much more an orchestra of Tui, Korimako and even Kea to the background sound of the waves landing on the blacksand shore. The Repo in late April teeming with bird life like Fernbird and Ngirungiru the Tomtit. Autumn in Ōkārito is what this Pounamu seems to me to be like ! Beautiful carving Nikita Stevenson to compliment.🍃🧡🍂
