Chapter7 The Buried Truth, Bitter Repentance, and Final Freedom
Chapter7 The Buried Truth, Bitter Repentance, and Final Freedom

[Narrator]: Daniela's real enemy had been her own actions, while Elena's life had become a debt the Navarro family could never repay. Daniela broke down. Sofía stood frozen near the door, then quietly slipped away, unwilling to remain inside the wreckage of a family secret. Alejandro released his sister and looked from his mother to Daniela and finally to the urn on the table. Exhaustion hollowed his face.
[Male]: "Tomorrow I will resign as chief executive and hand day-to-day control to the board. I don't want anything more from this family. I'm taking Elena with me."
[Female]: "Alejandro, where are you going?"
[Narrator]: His mother cried out in panic.
[Male]: "Anywhere, as long as it isn't here."
[Narrator]: He picked up the urn and left the La Moraleja villa. He drove aimlessly through the snowy Madrid night until he stopped near the same narrow side street where I had collapsed after the divorce. Holding the urn, he sank onto the cold pavement and rested against the brick wall.
[Male]: "Elena."
[Narrator]: He whispered her name, his fingers gently stroking the icy ceramic glaze.
[Male]: "I know the truth now. I know you were innocent. I know what you had to endure."
[Narrator]: His voice broke. Tears surged from his eyes again and fell in streams onto the snow.
[Male]: "But what good does knowing it do?" "You're gone." "You took your hatred and that final question with you, and you left me forever." "I'm not happy, Elena." "I'll never be happy again for the rest of my life."
[Narrator]: I floated in front of him and reached toward his haggard face, but my hand passed straight through his flesh, unable to leave behind even the slightest trace of warmth.
[Female]: "I don't hate you, Alejandro. I'm simply tired. The truth is out and the debt is finished, but my life is already gone. Whatever love we had could not survive what happened to us."
[Narrator]: My soul began to dissolve. Tiny points of light drifted upward into the air, merging with the endless white snowfall. I knew the time had come for me to leave. I bent down and placed an intangible kiss upon his forehead, a final farewell.
[Female]: "Keep living, Alejandro. Live with regret if you must, or live by becoming someone better than the man who hurt me. That is your life now. As for me, I am finally free."
[Narrator]: I closed my eyes and let the bitterly cold wind carry me farther and farther away, away from this city drowned in sorrow, away from the man I had once loved with my entire life. The snow continued to fall mercilessly, burying every trace of a love story stained with blood and tears.

Chapter6 — 745 TO 320
Chapter6 — 745 TO 320

Kingsley announced senior midterm honors during Monday assembly. The principal read the top ten names from the stage while the entire school stood in the courtyard.

Ethan placed third with a score strong enough to annoy everyone who had watched him sleep through first period. Our long-time academic rival from Homeroom One placed second.

Then the principal smiled and said, ‘First in the senior class: Alexandra Sterling. Seven hundred forty-five out of seven hundred fifty.’

Homeroom Eight erupted. Ethan nearly dislocated my shoulder congratulating me. Sienna screamed that losing five points on essay formatting was ‘the most Alexandra Sterling way possible’ to miss perfection.

Vivian stood three rows behind us, waiting for her own name.

The principal’s expression changed.

‘We also have a disciplinary matter linked to the examination challenge that has circulated across campus. Vivian Hart: three hundred twenty out of seven hundred fifty. Rank: last in the senior class.’

The courtyard exploded in whispers.

Vivian shouted that there had been a mistake. Then she accused me of buying influence with the graders. The principal cut her off and explained that our papers had been cross-graded multiple times exactly because I had requested independent review.

Dean Harper stepped forward and reminded Vivian of the wager. She was required to apologize publicly for the accusations she had made against me and Homeroom Eight.

Vivian refused.

Instead, she screamed that I must have seen the test in advance. She claimed Kingsley protected students with wealthy families and implied the faculty had leaked the exam to me.

That accusation was no longer merely about me. It questioned the integrity of the school.

I stepped onto the stage.

‘You are right about one thing, Vivian. Someone did try to see restricted test material before the exam.’

Her face changed.

I connected my phone to the enormous screen behind the stage and played the video.

There she was, unmistakable, alone in our classroom, photographing every page of the confidential academic-team packet.

The video played in terrible silence.

Then I explained exactly what had happened. The packet was not the midterm. Vivian had assumed it was useful enough to steal, memorized its methods, and entered the real exam unprepared for problems that changed the assumptions. The score she received was not proof of conspiracy. It was proof that memorizing stolen material was not the same thing as understanding it.

The principal cancelled her exam results, suspended her immediately, and referred the case to the disciplinary board for theft of restricted material, attempted academic misconduct, and repeated false accusations against students and staff.

As faculty escorted her away, Vivian looked at me with pure hatred and mouthed, ‘I will destroy you.’

I nodded once. ‘Take a number.’

The disciplinary board later confirmed that Vivian had not accessed the real exam, so her theft had not compromised the test itself. That distinction mattered. She was punished for what she actually did, not for what people imagined she might have done. Her suspension became expulsion after the board reviewed the theft, her false complaint against me, and her public accusation that faculty sold examination papers. For the first time since she arrived, there was no emotional shortcut left. Every decision was documented.

Chapter10 — THE BOARDROOM AFTER HOMEROOM
Chapter10 — THE BOARDROOM AFTER HOMEROOM

The next morning I attended an emergency Sterling Group board meeting in a tailored black suit instead of a school blazer.

Mr. Grant presented the trust clause, bank records, fake consulting agreements, property transfers, and the preliminary forensic accounting. The numbers were worse than we expected. My father had used his position as CEO to direct company funds through related entities for years.

I sat opposite him at the conference table, where executives twice my age kept glancing between the papers and my face.

My father tried to call the investigation a family dispute. I told the board that a family dispute did not create falsified contracts or unreported related-party transfers.

The trust board revoked his proxy authority. Sterling Group terminated him as CEO. The board referred the financial evidence to law enforcement and civil counsel for recovery.

When investigators entered the room with a warrant, Daniel Mercer looked at me for the first time without pretending to be my father. He looked like a man trying to understand how the child he had underestimated had become the person holding the door open while his empire disappeared.

I did not say goodbye.

Laura Hart discovered very quickly that love became less romantic once the money was frozen. She took what jewelry and cash she could still access and disappeared with another man, leaving Vivian alone in New York.

Vivian’s academic misconduct record followed her. Roosevelt would not take her back, and other competitive schools refused transfer applications after the Kingsley investigation became known. She ended up working restaurant shifts while trying to complete school through a less selective program.

I did not celebrate that part. Poverty was never the punishment I wanted for her, and being forced to work was not shameful. The consequence that mattered was simpler: she had wanted admiration without character, authority without responsibility, and victory without competence. When those shortcuts failed, she finally had to live without a stage full of people she could blame.

At Kingsley, Homeroom Eight returned to normal—which meant it remained completely abnormal.

I kept school and the company deliberately separate. During the day I reviewed college applications, student-council budgets, and Grace’s scholarship essays. In the evening I sat through forensic-accounting updates and board calls. It was absurd to move from arguing over graduation seating to discussing asset recovery within the same twelve-hour period, but the rhythm steadied me. Kingsley reminded me that I was still eighteen. Sterling Group reminded me that eighteen was not an excuse to be careless.
