For those new here, I'm Louise and I am the designer and maker of all things beautiful for my little business, Blooms are Pretty! I live in Hastings, New Zealand, with my husband and grown up children (two are at university and one still lives at home).
As I child, I was drawn to pretty things and women wearing pretty dresses. I loved visiting houses that had a sewing or craft room. I would stand in awe of the visual delight, gazing lovingly at the array of fabrics neatly folded and stacked on floor-to-ceiling shelving, rolls of ribbon and jars of buttons; projects in the process of being created sitting in front of me on a sewing table.
I knew that when I grew up, this would be my dream. Pretty things, pretty dresses and my very own sewing room!
My path followed a slightly different journey, training as both a primary school and early childhood teacher and having three children through my studies and early career. I fully immersed myself in a fulltime teaching career while raising three children and this barely left a spare second to even pick up a needle and thread. It was only when the school holidays rolled around that I would unpack my sewing machine and spend the holiday break working on a few sewing projects. As the holidays came to an end, my machine would be packed away until the next term break.
It was during lockdown in 2020 that I came to the realisation that I wanted to spend more of my time sewing and knitting and less time tied to being a full-time teacher. I had done the fulltime teaching gig for about 20 years and I had to admit to myself and my husband that I was burnt out!
So Blooms are Pretty began to blossom.
I started off making a couple of dresses in my size, so if they didn't sell, I'd keep them myself, but they did sell! And that is how it all began. One piece after another, each lovingly handmade by me....
With love, Louise x
By the way, I don't actually have a sewing room, it's more like a sewing house lol!
