Thank goodness for friends and the Hawke's Bay sunshine. This morning's shenanigans involved loading and unloading Jamie's The Small Hall Sessions van several times and employing the muscles of son Max, mate Karl Bloomfield Creative and lovely Wardini Ro, who is extraordinarily brainy with logistics and such.
Thank you to everyone on Joll Road today who waited patiently while we were completely in the way. Getting there!

Also I'm standing oddly because I was trying to show off my Small Halls t-shirt with the same picture as the van.

The game is afoot! We're still at Te Mata Road for at least another week, but we have the keys and have begun the magic ...

The game is afoot! We're still at Te Mata Road for at least another week, but we have the keys and have begun the magic at Joll Road. The Sci/Fi Fantasy corner was de-constructed last night, ready for re-construction maybe tonight, and Catt's book babies are on full display. If you'd like to come and buy some to save us carting them across the car park, that would be splendid!
In other news, SOMEONE (looking at you, Head of HR) did a bang up job of threading fairy lights in an extraordinarily complex way 13 years ago. We did not thank him for it last night.

One of Aotearoa’s most distinguished living writers, it’s a real pleasure to welcome Witi Ihimaera Smiler back to our festival this year. Witi has a new book, Te Kaikaukau / The Swimmer, a memoir describing his journey in te reo Māori, involving a return to full-time study at the age of eighty.
More than a rediscovery of language, the book describes Witi’s reclaiming “his voice, history and whakapapa in contemporary Aotearoa” (publisher). It’s always a pleasure to see Allyson Gofton who will be talking about her new book, 'Give: seasonal recipes for gifting'. It’s a stunning collection of recipes and $30 from the sale of each book goes towards a cure for breast cancer.
Allyson’s an engaging speaker as well as an inspiring cook so anyone who enjoys food won’t want to miss this one, especially as she’ll be speaking with another stellar cook, Vanya Insul (VJ Cooks), with local foodie Lizzie Russell as chair.

Giant Heart (out now) is wonderful and sad and inspirational and The Comeback Kid (fingers crossed for delivery tomorrow) is full of life and dedication and adventure. I should have mentioned the fabulously immersive illustrations in TCK by Story Hemi-Morehouse but got carried away - they fill the book with so much life and extra interest.

Dive in - and if the kids won't let you read with them, nab the books when they've finished.
