Hoki Hoko Thrifty Finds VINTAGE RETRO SHOP

Offering up timeless sustainable pieces for purchase. Keeping things out of our landfills. Kia ora and welcome to my page.

Firstly, what brought me to creating this page and why. The best place is always to ask "why"? As a young girl growing up in Tamaki Makaurau my grandmother (Nana) and my mother Robin (Robyn) use to take me to "Op Shops" and " Flea Markets". My earliest recollections were going to the Salvation Army Shop on Symonds Street, my Nana and I would catch the bus into town, Nana always on the lookout for

a bargain. My mother and Nana and sometimes Dad would wake me up in the wee small hours of the morning to head to the flea market that was held in the car park behind K Road (some of you may recall those times). When I say "wee small hours" it would be about 5.30am in the morning, I'd still be trying to wake up. I remember my Nana buying me this little black handbag, I remember it vividly, this was back in the 70s, so I'm guessing that little black bag would have had some age to her. I fell in love with that bag, hence still being able to recall it. This is probably another reason why I have an attraction towards handbags to this day. My Aunty Eva who lived in Dargaville (Takiwira) use to take me along to markets where she would have a stall. She would sell pot plants and nick naks she had, I'd find myself getting all excited at how people would purchase things off her and I'd be able to have a look around at all the other stall holders and what they were selling. During my lifetime I've always enjoyed getting something for a bargain. I've always loved popping into Op Shops, Garage Sales and Markets in the hope of finding something. Which brings me to the present day, creating a FB page, where I can share with you some "finds" and offer them up to you for sale. NOTE: The page is a work in progress at the moment, however I do hope to be uploading items for sale very soon. Feel free to message me if you have any questions.

Mōrena Team Hoki,

Welcome to Tuesday.

YES! Its Tuesday and the beginning of our week.

Yesterday's "throwback" post was a reminder to us just how much the shop has evolved since we opened back in March.

There's a lot to be said about being self employed and running a business.

The countless "unpaid" hours of behind the scenes hard work that goes on.

But the thing that drives us forward is the passion we have for our business, the ideas that go through your mind constantly 😆

So to all our small businesses working hard on their dream, this post is an acknowledgement of all our hard work :)

We're back in the shop today at 10am.

Happy Tuesday everyone.

Mōrena Team Hoki,

Welcome to Monday.

This morning I'm sharing a throwback to our humble beginnings back in February/March.

Moral of this story is "hard work pays off" but also a reminder of what the shop looked like before..............

Most people remember the veggie guys and Delwyn, Helen and Marybella prior to the veggie guys and the long line of businesses that have been in this shop.

For now, we're the custodians of this wee space and we're making the most of it ;)

Happy Monday everyone.

Mōrena Team Hoki,

Welcome to Sunday.

We're closed today, back in the shop on Tuesday.

Yesterday was a busy day in the shop with a surprising amount of customers for such a wishy washy day.

We farewelled this beautiful set of glasses as they left the shop heading to their new forever home.

We're always appreciative of our customers who lovingly take their time to have a good look around.

We also had a group of ladies who came in who I named "the ladies in red", they were a bundle of laughs bringing their youthful energy to our shop.

They're members of the motorhome association in town with their hubbies ;) not sure what they'd done with their husbands as they were out roaming the town unsupervised 🤣😆😂

Happy Sunday everyone.

Mōrena Team Hoki,

Welcome to Saturday.

"Design Ideas" - Joanne went down the rabbit hole on Pinterest looking for interesting ideas that we might like to incorporate into our home 🏡 with a strong focus on "lighting"

Who doesn't like creating a new board on Pinterest ;)

I'm also looking at different shelving for our rather extensive book collection.

Yesterday in the shop we got some more delicious items put out on the shelves in particular some beautiful hand blown glass if that peaks your interest.

Dad's, we've not forgotten your special day is coming up next month, so keep an eye out over the next few weeks as we introduce new items to the shelves.

Happy Saturday everyone.

Mōrena Team Hoki,

Welcome to Friday.

Yesterday was a productive day with lots of behind the scenes organizing getting done.

We had a few visitors in the shop with great conversations being had, and stories being shared.

Guess what? Father's day is fast approaching and we're getting some goodies out on the shelves in preparation for dad's big day. One dad came in and picked out his pre purchase pressie for his children to come in and pay for 😆 clever daddy getting in quick.

Happy Friday everyone.

Mōrena Team Hoki,

Welcome to Thursday.

Recently the Hokitika Club purchased this beautiful "treasure chest" from us.

Its now in its new forever home and doesn't it look fantastic and of course suits the theme of the restaurant.

We love seeing how you've curated your new treasures, feel free to send us some photos and we'll happily share in our posts.

Happy Thursday everyone.

Mōrena Team Hoki,

Welcome to Wednesday.

Yesterday was quiet in the shop, so we started to do a few resets which ended up by me creating chaos in the shop 😆

Which basically means, I've got some cleaning to do today.

As things have been quiet we've decided to reduce our hours to 10am - 2pm for the month of August and will review how things are tracking at the end of the month.

We're also going to have a few disruptions this month, we'll be closed next Thursday and the following Thursday, don't worry if you forget, we'll make sure to remind you.

We're(ME) 😆 wanting to change a few things around a bit and I'm guessing this is our chance to do a "deep clean" of the shop leading up to Spring.

Happy Wednesday everyone.

Mōrena Team Hoki,

Welcome to Tuesday.

We're back in the shop this morning, we'll be cranking up the heater this morning so the shop will be nice and cozy for our customers.

Today we'll be sorting out a few things behind the scenes in preparation for Spring.

Ok so what we'll really be doing is organizing our stock ready for the warmer months 😀

Its always a good idea to make the most of these quiet months, perfect time to plan ahead and be ready for SUMMER ☀️

Happy Tuesday everyone.

Mōrena Team Hoki,

Welcome to a wet West Coast Monday.

I've had these to pictures pinned to our wall to help give me ideas for our kitchen/living room.

We've got a salvaged formica kitchen bench to go in thats a soft yellow colour and now I'm just trying to figure out our colour scheme along with the decor to match.

So what do we do on a rainy day? We plan the next stages of our renovations.

You might see me in the shop today getting ready for tomorrow ;)

Sometimes its easier to do things when we're closed.

Happy Monday everyone.

Mōrena Team Hoki,

We're closed today, back in the shop on Tuesday.

This mornings post is about these two lads who have been doing work on our house for the past 4-6 weeks.

They endured our wet weather and a personal loss in their whānau but that didn't stop them from getting the job done.

We live in a 100 year old house that has been in desperate need of love. Well she's been loved up and looking much better.

We've still got a ways to go, and I'm excited to be giving our home some long overdue loving.

A massive shout out to Al and Harry for coming over from Canterbury to do our job.

On their last day they popped into the shop and gave us a bunch of flowers to say thank you for working with them.

I actually learnt a few things too ;)

Happy Sunday everyone.
