This ball is to show needlefelters what grey possum fibre (from New Zealand) looks like when it's been needlefelted into a merino surface. It's super soft and lovely to touch, and has potential for making super-cuddly toys which are suitable for sensitive skins. Tan colour also available.
If you'd like to know why we're selling possum fibre, please see the video in the comments.

This afternoon I made a "Youtube studio", so I can make instructional videos on how to work with possum fibre, batting, prefelt, and felt, and how to make the kits which at this stage will include balls (for making hats), hats, flat pads for making flat items, scarves and cushions.

HOW CAN NEEDLE-FELTERS USE POSSUM FIBRE?

Decorative needle-felting
Possum fibre can be used to make a realistic fur on your creations. If you would like small quantities of specific colours, including golden-orange, fawn, dark brown and black, please contact me.

Pull the possum fibre apart in your fingers, then needle-felt it directly into a merino surface.

If you are needle felting a child's toy, the addition of possum fibre on the surface will make it very soft and cuddly.

Tip- 'Drag' your needle across the possum fibres before pushing into the merino, as this will be more efficient than simply straight up and down needle-felting. A bubbly appearance will come first, but keep working until it disappears and a consistent surface of delicate fine fibres appears.

Functional needle-felting
If you are making functional items like hats and bags by needle-felting, you can either pre-blend the possum fibre to make your own batting, or, you could add it to the surface of your creation to create a very cuddly surface.

HOW CAN SPINNERS USE NZ POSSUM FIBRE?
It is possible to make your own possum-merino hand-spun yarn, though you need to be a fairly experienced spinner, because the fibres are short and the yarn must be spun tightly and consistently.

You can either:
* create your own blend of merino wool and possum fibre, by blending then together either by hand carding or drum carding, and then spin tightly; or,
* first card your possum fibre, then during spinning with merino wool, "free-add" small amounts of possum fibre into the wool with one hand as you hold the wool with your other hand, near the point of spinning.

In both cases, be sure to spin tightly.

Your possum-merino yarn and end garment will be lovely and soft and warm.

I have 30g packets of A-grade possum fibre for sale in my Etsy shop, with free shipping worldwide wide. Larger amounts available too.

HOW CAN WET-FELTERS USE NZ POSSUM FIBRE?
If you are making a wet-felted garment, hat, footwear, or something that you want to be soft and warm against the skin, you can make your own blended batting of possum-merino fibre first (25:75 possum:metino), then use it in your construction as your next-to-the-skin layer.

Alternatively, you could purchase possum-merino batting or pre-felt from our sister shop, "The Possum-Merino Felt Project".
