The Little Black Gallery is a modern lifestyle and art space, home to desirable goodies from New Zealand and around the globe. orking studio. We aim to provide a friendly, relaxed environment in which to make a wide variety of quality art accessible to all. Well-established and new artists contribute to this. Little Black Gallery focuses on local and national artists and designers and offers original art, jewellery, prints, art blocks, ceramics and gifts. Vicki Comrie-Moore is one of them.

Working in clay for many years, Vicki is known for her colourful, quirky and instantly recognisable creations. Self-taught and inspired by a lifelong love of drawing, sculpture and the natural world, Vicki's work has found homes throughout New Zealand and beyond.

Many visitors will already know her much-loved Party People, which have become highly collectable over the years. We also stock a wonderful range of her kete, standing figures, candle holders, prickle pots and other unique pieces.

There's a warmth and sense of fun in everything Vicki creates, making her work as enjoyable to live with as it is to look at.

The best collections aren't built in a weekend.

Many of our clients don't begin by setting out to become collectors. They simply find something they connect with and take it home.

These vibrant leaves by Liz McAuliffe are painted in acrylic on canvas and inspired by the natural forms found around us every day. Some reflect the distinctive shapes of gum leaves, while others draw inspiration from the organic patterns and colours associated with Hundertwasser's work.

𝗡𝗼 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 — 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝘆.

Over time, that became the inspiration behind this piece.

What Makes a Crystalline Glaze So Special?

Those distinctive circular patterns aren't painted or carved into the surface. They're crystals that have actually grown within the glaze during firing.

Crystalline glazes are among the most fascinating techniques in ceramics. During a carefully controlled firing process, crystals develop within the molten glaze, creating patterns that can never be replicated exactly.

Temperature, timing and chemistry all play a part, and even small variations can produce dramatically different results. The result is that every piece is completely unique.

This porcelain vessel by Maren Newport is a beautiful example of the process, revealing the remarkable crystal formations that make crystalline glazes so sought after by collectors and ceramic enthusiasts alike.
