Little Black Gallery

Little Black Gallery The Little Black Gallery celebrates jewellery, art and design objects. Everything is chosen because we love it and believe our customers will too.

The Little Black Gallery is a modern lifestyle and art space, home to desirable goodies from New Zealand and around the globe. Our style is eclectic, with a personal classical approach to great service. Our customers come instore, take a deep breath, and constantly say "wow" about how good our space makes them feel. Opened 2016, the gallery displays both local and national artists and is also a w

orking studio. We aim to provide a friendly, relaxed environment in which to make a wide variety of quality art accessible to all. Well-established and new artists contribute to this. Little Black Gallery focuses on local and national artists and designers and offers original art, jewellery, prints, art blocks, ceramics and gifts. You can visit us in Kerikeri, Bay of Islands, on site at Treghan Luxury Lodge. As well as the hours shown, we are also available by appointment - please call 021 771 299 or 021 109 0092.

One of the questions weโ€™re sometimes asked is whether a piece of art will โ€œgoโ€ with a room.

Itโ€™s understandable, but Iโ€™m not sure itโ€™s the best place to start.

Art doesnโ€™t need to match the sofa, pick up a colour in the curtains or conform to a particular decorating style. In fact, some of the most interesting rooms bring together works from completely different artists, periods and styles.

What connects them is often simply the person who chose them.

If you buy work because you genuinely respond to it, rather than because it fits a decorating scheme, something rather lovely happens over time. Your collection begins to tell its own story.

Pieces bought years apart can sit happily together. A small ceramic work can hold its own beside a large painting. Something quiet can work alongside something exuberant.

There are practical considerations when hanging and displaying art, of course, but I think the most important rule is the simplest one:

Choose art you want to live with.

The rest can usually be worked out.

A change of season. New colour, new energy, new ways of seeing.

This October, Little Black Gallery brings together a wonderfully diverse group of New Zealand artists and makers for New Light, our new spring exhibition.

Across painting, sculpture, ceramics, jewellery and mixed media, each artist has interpreted the idea of new light in their own way, through landscape, colour, form, growth, movement and new beginnings.

Weโ€™d love you to join us for the opening of New Light at 4pm on Thursday 22 October.

Come along, enjoy a glass of w**e, meet some of the artists and be among the first to see the exhibition.

Part of the beauty of Maren Newportโ€™s ceramics is seeing several pieces together.

The porcelain forms may share the same rich cobalt palette and crystalline glazing technique, but look more closely and each has developed its own completely individual surface.

Some crystals spread dramatically across the glaze, others form smaller intricate patterns. Even the depth and movement of the blue changes from piece to piece.

That unpredictability is part of what makes Marenโ€™s work so interesting. Each vessel is hand-thrown and individually fired, creating an original ceramic piece that can never be repeated exactly.

We currently have a selection of Marenโ€™s work at Little Black Gallery. Come in and choose the one that speaks to you.

Thereโ€™s a wonderful sense of discovery in Rachel Barberโ€™s paintings.

Look closely and you begin to see the layers of pattern, line, symbol and shape that form Rachelโ€™s own visual language. Rather than painting a particular landscape or subject, she works intuitively, often beginning with a feeling and allowing connections to develop across the canvas.

Rachel has spoken about the lasting impression of seeing Monetโ€™s Water Lilies in Paris and being surrounded by paintings that seemed capable of continuing endlessly beyond their boundaries.

Thereโ€™s something of that same idea in her own work. Patterns move into one another, shapes reappear and disappear, and your eye continues to find something new.

This detail is from Little Green Flower, one of Rachelโ€™s original paintings currently available at Little Black Gallery.

Come in and see the whole work, along with more from our collection of original New Zealand art.

Thereโ€™s something lovely about a bud vase. A single flower, a small branch picked from the garden, a few spring blossoms. Nothing elaborate is needed.

Briar Monroโ€™s wheel-thrown bud vases are made in small runs using 100% New Zealand clay, with glazes she develops herself from raw materials.

Based in Parua Bay, Briarโ€™s approach to ceramics is thoughtful and grounded in the materials and landscape around her. She describes making pottery as an act of stillness, with the hope that the finished pieces become part of the small rituals of everyday life.

These little vases capture that beautifully. Handmade, functional and each with its own subtle variations in form and glaze, theyโ€™re just as lovely sitting quietly on a shelf as they are holding something gathered from the garden.

A selection of Briarโ€™s ceramics is available now at Little Black Gallery.

Sue Wallaceโ€™s hanging mosaic garden spinners bring colour, movement and a little bit of joy to the garden.

Each teardrop-shaped piece is individually created from colourful glass and recycled materials, with birds, bees, flowers and other elements from the natural world appearing amongst the intricate mosaic.

Hung from a tree or somewhere they can move freely, they turn gently in the breeze, catching the sunlight and sending changing flashes of colour through the garden.

With spring almost here, theyโ€™re a lovely way to add something unexpected amongst the trees and planting.

A selection of Sueโ€™s garden spinners is available now at Little Black Gallery.

One of the Far Northโ€™s most recognisable places, captured in Brenda Moirโ€™s distinctive style.

Painted in acrylic on recycled wood, the surface becomes part of the work itself, with the grain and texture of the timber showing through the layers of paint.

Here, Brenda captures the Cape Reinga lighthouse against that extraordinary meeting of sea and sky, with the pathway drawing you towards one of the most dramatic landscapes in Northland.

We love the fact that the recycled wood gives the painting its own history and character, making each piece completely individual.

Available now at Little Black Gallery.

Once considered a rather old-fashioned garden flower, dahlias are enjoying a wonderful come back. With their extraordinary colours, forms and seemingly endless varieties, it isn't difficult to see why.

And if you've caught the dahlia bug, Discovering Dahlias from Floret Farm is one of the best books to have beside you.

Written by renowned flower grower Erin Benzakein, it's packed with practical advice on choosing, growing, caring for and dividing dahlias, alongside beautiful photography, flower-arranging inspiration and a catalogue of varieties organised by colour.

Part growing guide, part inspiration, and very much a book to lose yourself in.

New stock has just arrived at the gallery.

What makes us stop and look twice?

Sometimes it's exceptional craftsmanship. Sometimes it's colour, texture or form. It might be the story behind a piece, an unusual use of materials, or something we haven't seen before.

Sometimes it's much harder to define. A piece simply has something about it.

When we choose work for Little Black Gallery, we're looking for originality and quality, but also for pieces that have their own character and sit comfortably alongside the very different work already in the gallery.

It's one of the reasons you'll find paintings beside ceramics, jewellery alongside sculpture, and beautifully made objects for the home mixed throughout the gallery.

Different artists. Different materials. Different stories.

But always something that made us stop and look again.
