One of the questions weโre sometimes asked is whether a piece of art will โgoโ with a room.
Itโs understandable, but Iโm not sure itโs the best place to start.
Art doesnโt need to match the sofa, pick up a colour in the curtains or conform to a particular decorating style. In fact, some of the most interesting rooms bring together works from completely different artists, periods and styles.
What connects them is often simply the person who chose them.
If you buy work because you genuinely respond to it, rather than because it fits a decorating scheme, something rather lovely happens over time. Your collection begins to tell its own story.
Pieces bought years apart can sit happily together. A small ceramic work can hold its own beside a large painting. Something quiet can work alongside something exuberant.
There are practical considerations when hanging and displaying art, of course, but I think the most important rule is the simplest one:
Choose art you want to live with.
The rest can usually be worked out.
