Kia ora whānau,

A little Packhouse update from us 💚

We won’t be at The Old Packhouse Market this weekend, as I’ve managed to injure myself in the most Antoinette way possible - playing with a sausage dog, being fully joyful, and now requiring crutches for a few days.

Fingers crossed it’s only a few days 🙃

So this weekend is looking a little more “feet up” than full presentation mode.

All is well, and we’ll know more soon. Right now, I just need to give my body a few solid days of rest so it can recover properly.

In the meantime, our online gallery is open as always, and you’re very welcome to message us if there is something you’d love to explore.

As many of you know, only a small selection of our treasures ever make it online.

Most of our pounamu carvings, gemstone jewellery, and mineral specimens find their homes within about a month, so many pieces are shared through private kōrero, photographs, videos, and one-on-one video calls rather than being listed on our website straight away.

So if you were hoping to visit us this weekend, or if there is a particular carving, piece of jewellery, mineral specimen, stone, meaning, or gift you are looking for, please feel free to reach out.

Creativity doesn’t only happen when the stone is being carved…

Sometimes it begins long before my hands touch the pounamu.

In the quiet moments 🧘🏽‍♀️
In movement 🤸🏽‍♀️
In music 🎼
In conversation 👥️
In nature 🌿

In the seasons where I am filling my own cup so I can return to the workshop with something real to give.

Behind the scenes, my creative mind is almost always moving.

Sometimes that looks like working with pounamu at the bench, feeling into the form, turning a piece in the light, noticing the markings, the weight, the curve, the direction it wants to take.

Other times it looks like dancing, singing, writing, speaking, training, stretching, walking, or sitting quietly enough to hear what is trying to come through.

That is something I’ve learnt about creativity.

🔸️ It needs discipline.
🔸️It needs softness.
🔸️It needs energy.
🔸️It needs rest.
🔸️It needs wairua.

For me, there is always a dance between the structured side and the flowing side.

The part of me that shows up, works hard, solves problems, refines the details, and does the mahi.

And the part of me that needs beauty, movement, connection, breath, laughter, music, and moments that bring me back to myself.

Both matter ✨️

Because carving pounamu is not only about the hands...

It is about the whole person behind the hands.

🔸️ The energy I bring.
🔸️ The way I listen.
🔸️ The way I notice.
🔸️ The way I let the stone lead, while still bringing skill, care, and intention to the process.

Every new beginning has roots...

The Koru is one of Aotearoa's most recognisable carving forms, inspired by the unfurling frond of the ātaahua native fern.

It is often associated with new beginnings, growth, hope, and the continuous journey of life.

But one of the things I've always loved most about the Koru is that it reminds us no new beginning starts from nothing.

Every new chapter is shaped by the people we've met.

🔸️ The lessons we've learnt.

🔸️ The challenges we've overcome.

🔸️ And the values we choose to carry forward.

Perhaps that's why the Koru continues to resonate with so many people.

It reminds us that growth isn't about leaving the past behind.

It's about honouring it while continuing to grow 🌿

I finished these Porowhita pounamu earrings this morning, and they feel like a quiet full circle moment… 💚

Porowhita speaks to the circle - a form with no hard beginning and no final end.

When I carve this form, it always brings me back to the cycles we move through in life.

🔸️ The past that shaped us.

🔸️ The present we are standing in.

🔸️ The future we are still growing toward.

🔸️ The endings that become beginnings.

🔸️ The lessons that return with new meaning.

🔸️ The quiet ways we evolve, soften, strengthen, and come back to ourselves again.

That is what I love about Porowhita.

It looks simple at first glance, but the longer you sit with it, the more it seems to speak.

This pair has a soft, grounding elegance to them. Meaningful, but easy to wear. Gentle, but still present 🙏🏽

Some stones are beautiful.
Some stones make you ask better questions.

Lapis Lazuli is one of them 💙

That deep royal blue.
Those golden flecks of pyrite.
That ancient, almost regal presence.

It is easy to see why Lapis has been treasured for so long.

But Lapis also carries a deeper conversation.

🔸️ Where did it come from?
🔸️ How was it sourced?
🔸️ Was care taken along the way?

For me, stones are never just pretty objects.

If something is going to sit in your home, be worn close, gifted with meaning, or become part of your story, then provenance matters.

Beauty matters ✨️

But integrity matters too.

And with stones like Lapis Lazuli, I believe we should be willing to ask better questions.

Not from fear.

From respect 🙏🏽

Because true beauty should be able to sit beside truth.

The taonga you keep looking back at is usually worth listening to… 🌿

I filmed a few of our latest pieces slowly in the light, so you can see what photos do not always capture - the glow, the polish, the depth of colour, the movement in the stone, and the quiet presence each piece carries.

🔸️ Some feel soft and grounding.

🔸 ️Some feel strong and protective.

🔸 ️Some feel like a new chapter.

🔸️ Some feel like a reminder of who you are becoming.

🔸️ And some feel like they already belong to someone you love.

That is one of the things I love most about this mahi ♥️

A piece may first catch your eye because of its colour or form, but often the deeper connection comes from something quieter - a memory, a milestone, a person, a season of life, or a feeling you cannot quite put into words yet.

Choosing a taonga is not a calculation...

It is a felt, whole-body experience 🙏🏽

It is not always the darkest green.
Or the most translucent.
Or the shape you thought you wanted before you arrived.

Sometimes two carvings can share the same form and still feel completely different 🌿

One may feel grounding.
One may feel strong.
One may feel gentle.
One may feel like protection.
One may feel like a breath you did not realise you needed.

That is the part I love watching✨️

Someone will ask me, “How do I know which one is right?”

And often, before they have even answered their own question, their hands already know.

They pick one up.
Put it down.
Pick up another.
Look back at the first one.
Hold it again.
Turn it in the light.
Pause.

That pause matters.

Because taonga is not only chosen with the eyes.

It is felt❤️

I can share the form, the stone, the carving process, and the kōrero behind the piece.

But the deeper connection?

That belongs to you.

The colour.
The weight.
The markings.
The memory it stirs.
The person it reminds you of.
The season of life it seems to meet you in.

That is where the real choosing happens.

So if you are ever standing in front of pounamu and wondering which one is “the one,” try this:

Step out of your head for a moment...

Finish the binding of this taonga with me 💚

This is one of those quiet workshop moments people do not always get to see.

The carving may be finished, but the taonga is not truly complete until the binding is done with care.

In this reel, I’m talking through part of the process as I finish the cord, secure the binding, and bring this piece one step closer to being ready for the person it is meant to journey with.

It is slow mahi.
Careful mahi.
Hands-on mahi.

And every little detail matters.

The way the cord sits.
The way the taonga hangs.
The way it will be worn, held, gifted, and carried forward.

That is part of the beauty of a handmade taonga - the final details are never rushed.
