Marama Apotheke aims to produce effective natural remedies to ease pain and discomfort and to support wellbeing by blending traditional rongoā Māori with modern aroma science.
Aroma science is the study of volatile organic compounds and their uses. They are often highly concentrated in essential oils extracted from plants.
Against common assumptions, it is not just about the scents. Instead, the compounds in these oils can have a variety of effects on the body when absorbed through the skin. As examples, some are numbing, others antimicrobial, and others again affect hormone receptors.
By adding their own range of effects, essential oils complement traditional rongoā Māori well.
