I've just arrived home from a trip to Australia. Naturally, I wanted to visit some plant shops, and my son Sam was keen to add to his collection - with some guidance from me, of course!

The week flew by, and we managed to squeeze in a visit to where we were wowed by the large, gorgeous, healthy plants!

Sam scored a big Monstera deliciosa, a large Monstera adansonii, and a gorgeous Ctenanthe golden mosaic. Perfect for adding jungle vibes to his Sydney apartment.

I was just a little green-eyed monster 🌿💚

Saturday 8th July, I will be at the Khandallah Botanist Market with lots of luscious indoor plants. All potted up in NZ-made recyclable clear pots with my soil-free houseplant mix or fern fibre mix. I will have some supplies available too.

Peperomia caperata Rosso is one of my favourite little plants, with dark green ridges on the leaves and gorgeous red underneath.

Like most peperomia, they are very easy care because they don't require a lot of water. You can water from the top or the bottom, but take care not to get water on the leaves or they will rot.

Native to Brazil, they prefer bright indirect light and an open/airy free-draining potting mix.

They don't require much fertiliser, just an occasional liquid feed once a month during spring and summer.

Like all peperomia, they are non-toxic, so safe around kids and pets.

Persian Shield (Strobilanthes dyerianus) has vibrant purple leaves when grown in bright light, although the colour does fade as the leaves age.

To keep a nice, strong purple, Persian Shield can handle some direct sun for part of the day. Don't let the soil dry out, or it will fully collapse, and you'll think you’ve killed it! However, it will bounce right back within 24 hours once watered.

It can be grown outdoors in frost free areas, but it would require some shade and a sheltered position. Best treated as an annual if grown outdoors in cooler parts of NZ, with new plants grown from cuttings during the growing season Spring-Summer.

Sadly, I have withdrawn from this weekend's Botanist Market due to my lovely Tyson injuring himself yesterday.

He will be needing lots of TLC for the next few weeks, so my next market will be Khandallah Botanist Market, 8 July.
