Read by Reid is back with three great books to recommend to you and some juicy points for discussion, which you don't need to have read the books to delve into.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us last night to celebrate Colin Carruthers and his book, Twice Torpedoed.

That period of history is so rich with fascinating and devastating stories, and Colin uncle's experience as a merchant mariner is both in equal measure.

If you have a man in your life who loves wartime stories, Twice Torpedoed would make an excellent Father's Day gift.

During the two World Wars, 40,000 Merchant Marine volunteers lost their lives - including 27-year-old Colin Watt from Mangere, killed in January 1942 when the SS Coimbra was torpedoed off Long Island, New York.

One of 140 New Zealanders who joined the Merchant Navy, Watt helped fight Hitler’s failed attempt to starve the Allies into defeat. Captured at the Battle of the River Plate in 1939, Watt was held below deck on the Altmark (dubbed the N**i “hell ship”).

His nephew, Colin Carruthers tells his incredible story in the book, Twice Torpedoed. We're looking forward to hearing these stories and more in the bookshop tonight.

Did you know that Masterton has it's own crime series? 😅

Author Tom Baragwanath grew up in the Wairarapa and chose the mean streets of Masterton for backdrop of his nail-biting novels, Paper Cage and Lucky Thing.

He now lives in Paris, so we're very lucky to have him joining us this Wednesday for a special edition of Book Club!

All welcome, tickets are our usual Book Club price of $10 and include refreshments and 10% off books.
