Awesome TDC
Wahoo, TDC has approved its visionary Walking and Cycling Strategy! This is unambiguous that if nothing is done population growth will see road congestion get far worse and a step change needs to happen in urban centres. They have proposed a network of 50km roads in urban areas, that will have protected cycle paths, but between them other roads, will be 30kph traffic calmed greenways. Its fantastic that they have not only got this out, but got it through consultation and approved while Nelson City’s one is still yet to be seen. And we worry that it will be far too timid.
The document adopted by TDC last week aims to double active transport trips in urban areas by 2030 and triple them by 2050. It will do this through a blanket 30kph speed limit across urban areas except where protected cycle paths are provided. These are precisely the sort of measures required to get Nelson commuters and parents to shift from car transport. We eagerly await the Nelson's Active Transport Plan, and sincerely hope it will be as ambitious as TDC’s in making our streets safe for all people, not just those in cars.
