Location of the week 📍 Mount Campbell (Pukeone)

Looking to gain some altitude without tackling a technical trail? Mount Campbell is a great option. Standing at 1,330 metres, this peak sits west of Motueka at the northern end of the Arthur Range and is easily recognised by the huge transmission tower on its summit.

What you need to know:

Drive: Around one hour from Nelson
Distance: Approximately 9.2km return from the locked gate
Elevation gain: Around 550m from the gate
Time: Allow 3–4 hours return
The reward: Panoramic views across Tasman Bay towards Nelson and deep into Kahurangi National Park.
🥾 The terrain

If you have a 4WD, you can drive to the locked gate at approximately 780 metres, leaving a steady 550-metre climb to the summit. The route follows a 4WD road the entire way, making it straightforward underfoot and a good option for families or mountain biking.

For a bigger challenge—or if you don’t have a suitable vehicle—you can begin from the base of the mountain and take on approximately 1,300 metres of elevation gain on the 4WD track.

⚠️ Access
The upper route beyond the locked gate crosses private land. Please contact the phone number displayed on the gate to request permission before continuing to the summit.

The new Altra Olympus 7S

If you loved the Olympus 6 or maybe they weren’t for you… they might be now! here’s what’s changed with the new 7S:

- Updated upper material that’s more breathable and durable
- Improved grip on the trail
- Removed the heel tab from the Olympus 6 making your foot fit more snugly, deeper and more comfortable
- Plush improved tongue that’s super comfy
- Lighter and bouncier than before!

Here’s a zero-drop shoe that gives big cushioning without squashing your toes. The 7S builds on that with a few thoughtful updates.

For running, hiking and long days exploring, that combination of cushioning, space and grip is pretty hard to argue with. And if you want a more performance running shoe for technical terrain, check out the Altra Olympus 275!

Have you tried the Olympus 6? Would you make the jump to the 7S?

Location of the week 📍 Iron Hill, Kahurangi National Park

High above the Cobb Reservoir, Iron Hill offers incredible alpine scenery, big Mountain View’s and some beautiful tarns to camp at. With 360 views from Iron Hill summit, it’s a stunner!! Although at 1,695m high it’s not really a hill, well we don’t think so!

Drive: From Nelson: Approx. 2–2.5 hrs
Parking: Sylvester Hut Track car park, Cobb Dam Road
Distance: 18 km return to Iron Hill summit
Elevation gain: 1,000 m
Time: 8-9 hrs, depending on route and conditions
Stay: Sylvester Hut, or camp around Lake Sylvester or Iron Lake

The track to Sylvester Hut is marked and kid friendly with an easy track underfoot. Beyond Lake Sylvester the route is unmarked, with rock cairns leading you the way up past Little Sylvester and Iron Lake. From Iron Lake, it’s a steep climb up to the summit of Iron Hill. But it’s soooo worth it for the views 🤩 Kea, wilderness and pure alpine bliss you feel deep in the mountains away from it all. And iron lake is an epic camp spot with the infinity pool style lake where it feels like you’re on the edge looking down to Diamond and Lockett lakes

You can also extend the adventure for some off track exploring by heading down towards Diamond Lake. Or along the Lockett range to link up with Fenella hut too.,

⚠️ Good to know: This is remote alpine terrain. Check the weather and DOC alerts, carry reliable navigation and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.

Or you could be crazy like Jo and carry your paddleboard up here for an alpine paddle 🤣

🎉 Happy Birthday, Katie! 🎉

If you’ve popped into MD recently, you may have met Katie. We thought it was about time we properly introduced her!

Katie grew up exploring Aotearoa, spending plenty of time tramping, camping and discovering wild places with her family. She’s passionate about the connection between people and nature and the wellbeing that comes from spending time outdoors.

Katie’s such a water baby! When she’s not at MD, you’ll most likely find her at the beach surfing, having a dip in the river or the ocean, practising yoga, or heading off to explore another corner of our beautiful region.

Happy birthday, Katie! We hope you have a brilliant day and manage to squeeze in a surf to celebrate 🏄‍♀️🎂

🎉 Happy Birthday to the best boss, Emily! Emily Russell

The biggest heart, the gorgeous smiles and welcoming nature, this is the lady behind MD Outdoors that makes it feel like so much more than just a shop. Her vision, her drive and energy makes MD what it is!

Emily is always the first to welcome you through the door, always happy to go the extra mile to find that random bit of kit you’re after, and will quite literally bring things into the shop from home if she thinks it’ll help you get out on your next adventure. She’s got a wicked sense of humour and we love her cheeky wink!

She works so hard, yet always has time for you. When she’s not in the shop, you’ll usually find her exploring and generally finding another mountain to climb! 🏔️

So from all of us at MD Outdoors, Happy Birthday Emily! 🥳

We hope you have the best day and get out for a bloody good adventure to celebrate! ❤️

📍 Location of the Week - Coldwater hut

The perfect spot to hole up in winter that’s family friendly, cosy and peaceful.

Coldwater Hut sits right on the edge of Lake Rotoiti in Nelson Lakes National Park, and it’s one of those spots that feels properly away from it all. Coldwater is a standard 12-bunk hut with a fire, with the jetty right outside. It’s not bookable so use hut tickets for this one.

We love winter - Fewer people, beautifully crisp conditions and, as an added bonus, far fewer sandflies than you’ll encounter around the lake in summer.

📍 THE ROUTE
The most straightforward route is from the Mount Robert Road end. Park up before the main Mt Robert car park just where you see the trail head. Follow the Lakeside Track around the western shore of Lake Rotoiti to Coldwater Hut.

Another great option is a paddle from Kerr Bay down to the hut instead and have a different kind of overnight adventure.

🥾 Distance: 8km each way (230 elevation) or 8 km paddle in. Or you could loop round past Lakehead hut for a longer walk out.

⏱️ TIME
Allow 2-3 hours one way as the route can be rocky and overgrown.

⚠️ Check the latest DOC track conditions and weather forecast before you leave. It’s a great one in winter because it’s sheltered in the trees and low elevation.

If you’re paddling in, remember the lake is cold even when the weather looks perfect. Wear the appropriate safety gear, check the forecast and wind. The northerly winds can blow down this lake in the afternoon so paddle early for the best window 👌 You can also get the water taxi down to here too if you fancy taking it easy.

Happy hiking :)

Built for rough, technical trails, this new model of the trusty Ultra Raptor 2 hiking shoe features serious upgrades - delivering plenty of grip, protection and stability.

We love La Sportiva for delivering high quality shoes and boots everytime. Now wider and roomier, this could be a good time to try them if they were too narrow for you before.

Jo takes them up Mt Arthur to test them out and here’s her thoughts. Watch our full YouTube review for the fit, updated features, and our honest verdict to help you work out if these could be the right choice for you?
