Recently finished reading ‘In shock: from doctor to patient - what I learned about medicine’s inhumanity’ (2018) by Rana Awdish

Not my usual sort of read but after my hospital experience in September last year I was interested in how it is for those in the medical profession to be patients, especially in their area of expertise.

Dr Rana Awdish was seven months pregnant when she suffered a catastrophic event, haemorrhaging nearly all her blood volume and losing her first baby. She spent months in her own hospital having multiple surgeries and a series of organ failures.

Her insights into her treatment, when she wasn’t the one in charge or making decisions, changed her ideas of how doctors and nurses should manage patients. She realised how unhelpful and potentially life-threatening some of her previous behaviour had been and how she could change that behaviour in herself and others.

An interesting and enlightening read.

This is my main non-fiction bookcase at home. I recently cleaned every book and decided what I could part with then filled the gaps with all the books lying around the house.

Hearing Shaun Blythell talk about his latest acquisition of a beautiful leather case containing Scottish maps and exclaiming “and I’m keeping it!” reminds me how difficult it is to resist when running a secondhand bookshop.

My bookcases are full, I have to be strict and for everything that comes in, something has to be taken out.

This is the first bookcase, I’ll post the other one next week.

For those who like the Bloomsbury Group, you can probably guess that the decoration on the top and ends of the shelves was inspired by a visit a few years ago to Charleston, the home of Vanessa Bell et al. The work was done by a friend, Oliver.

Recently finished reading ‘The Warden’ (1855) by Anthony Trollope

The first novel in Trollop’s Chronicles of Barchester which I have been meaning to read for many years.

I brought this copy home from the bookshop because I liked the illustrations but unfortunately they don’t actually match the text at all. The cadaverous figures and odd facial expressions don’t match my mind’s eye and I wonder if the illustrator read the novel at all. Perhaps it’s just me because the blurb makes a special point of mentioning how well they suit the story.

This is a quiet but comic story of conscience vs comfort, principles vs love and generosity of spirit vs greed. I enjoyed it very much and look forward to reading the further five books in the series.
