The 19th century certainly excelled in giving elegance and beauty to practical items.
Here we have a Silverplated footed candle snuffer/ wick trimmer by Savory and Sons of London. It was produced between 1833-1865 & has their makers stamp and the blade has the official royal patent protection stamp of King William IV. In the mid 1800’s candle wicks were made of thick linen & didn’t burn away cleanly causing heavy soot & smoke so required trimming every 15-20 minutes.
The tray is also silverplated & nicely weighted with gilded floral motifs & the addition of a family crest featuring a Lion sejant. No makers mark but look to be a set.
