August is an exciting time in the garden. It’s when the temperatures finally start to rise and we transition from winter planting into spring planting.

It also means that our overwintered crops are beginning their slow process of setting seed, so it’s important to think ahead and start replacing them for ongoing harvests.

If that feels overwhelming, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! We have meticulously planned each month to suit the seasons, so all you need to think about is planting your seedlings in the ground and enjoying their harvests.

Our August boxes are available in three sizes, with a seasonal mix of vegetable, flower and herb seedlings delivered straight to your door, plus garden guidance to help you at every step of the way.

August orders close Saturday night, make sure to get your order in before then to receive your box the following week.

How we installed our garden trellis 🌱

With our raised garden bed built, the next step was installing a trellis to support our climbing crops.

There are plenty of ways to build a trellis, but for us, strength, durability, and simplicity were the priorities.

We chose reinforcing mesh because it's easy to install, built to last, and strong enough to support heavy summer crops.

Take these steps when installing a simple mesh trellis:
• Drive two steel standards into the ground on either side of the bed
• Secure the mesh using galvanised tie wire
• Trim any excess mesh level with the tops of the standards

A huge thank you to ITM Te Puke for generously donating the reinforcing mesh for this project.

How we built our new garden bed 🌱

Last week, our new raised garden bed was installed by Ro-Mows Whakatāne and will become the demonstration garden for Rooted & Rising Aotearoa.

Within this bed, we'll be growing alongside our subscribers, showing exactly how we plant and nurture each crop from seedling to harvest.

Building a new garden bed can be simple when you break it down into a few key steps:

• Mark out and level the site
• Loosen and prepare the soil beneath
• Lay cardboard to suppress weeds
• Fill with nutrient rich, moisture retaining soil media
• Water thoroughly and let settle before planting

Or, if you'd rather leave the hard work to someone else, get in touch with Roland at Ro-Mows Whakatāne and he'll build one for you!
