Crisis Bunker

Crisis Bunker Disaster Preparedness Made Simple.

We help communities, agencies, schools, marae, and families get ready for when disaster strikes by providing essential resources, supplies, and resilience solutions - because being prepared makes all the difference.

Over the last few years we've worked alongside hundreds of communities preparing for disasters.

One challenge kept coming up.

Communities often had a building.

They often had volunteers.

But when it came time to activate as a welfare centre or Community Emergency Hub, the practical tools needed to coordinate people, information and resources were often scattered, missing, or stored in multiple locations.

So our team started asking a simple question:

What if everything needed to activate a Community Emergency Hub was stored in one mobile unit, ready to go at a moment's notice?

Drawing on our experience supporting communities across Aotearoa, and using the Civil Defence Community Emergency Hub model as our foundation, we set out to create a practical system that could help communities get organised quickly when disaster strikes.

The result is the WASP.

The Welfare Activation System Pod.

A mobile welfare centre activation system containing the tools, resources, signage and coordination equipment needed to establish a functioning response centre when it matters most.

We're incredibly proud of what the team has created.

Not because it's another product.

But because we believe it will help community leaders spend less time searching for resources and more time supporting the people who need them.

On Friday we installed a new Resilience Hub at Whangārei Terenga Paraoa, an urban marae aligned with Ngāti Wai, Ngāpuhi and Ngāti Whātua.

This hub was co designed alongside the marae to support them to act as a welfare centre and community response base after a natural disaster. The mahi they already do in the community is huge, supporting some of the most vulnerable, including those experiencing homelessness, so it was important that the resilience measures put in place reflected the real needs of the people they serve.

The day brought together trustees, community members, Northland Civil Defence and Tarpmakers, who showcased their ARK water filled flood protection barrier system alongside the other preparedness infrastructure now in place at the marae.

Everything from emergency power, communications and welfare supplies through to activation systems and response planning has been designed to help the marae stand up and support their people when it matters most.

The whole day was also captured by TVNZ as part of an upcoming documentary highlighting the work we are doing with communities across Aotearoa to strengthen local disaster resilience.

A massive thank you to everyone involved in bringing this project to life. Seeing communities, iwi, emergency management and local partners all working together like this is exactly what resilience should look like.

At Tapuaekura-a-Hatupatu Marae, resilience is built on more than resources alone.

This Resilience hub carries the Kapowai, the dragonfly symbol connected to the story of Rakeiao, whose loyal warriors would come in their thousands to protect their people in times of battle.

Today, that spirit of protection lives on through practical preparedness, local leadership, and a community ready to support one another when it matters most.

It was an honour to work alongside Tapuaekura-a-Hatupatu Marae on this Resilience Hub installation.

Strong communities are built before emergencies happen.

With another cyclone tracking toward the North Island this weekend, the whole country is getting prepared.

We’ve definitely felt it, things have been flat out with people getting their plans and gear sorted.

That personal preparedness is important.

But in a largescale event, it quickly becomes about more than just your household.

Communities rely on marae and local hubs to step up, to support people, coordinate, and provide a place to go when needed.

If you haven’t already, take a minute to think about it:
Where would you go if you had to leave?

Take a few minutes today to check your local Civil Defence website, or connect with your marae to understand the plan.

If you are part of a Marae or community centre and want to take your preparedness seriously, get in touch.

We were proud to gift a Resilience Locker to Mount Maunganui Primary School this week to help support their emergency preparedness.

After the Mauao landslide tragedy, we wanted to do something positive for our local community. We led this initiative alongside some of our project supporters, including Bunnings Warehouse Mount Maunganui, Bunnings Warehouse Tauranga, Skite Digital and Dovetail Solutions, who stepped up to help make it happen.

Ngā mihi to everyone involved in supporting this kaupapa and helping strengthen community preparedness. 💛

Days like today are exactly why Resilience Hubs exist.

As a major weather system causes flooding across parts of Aotearoa, we’ve been advised that several community hubs we’ve supported in Northland, the Coromandel, and the Bay of Plenty have now activated as Civil Defence stand-ups.

These hubs were designed, equipped, and planned for moments like this, with backup power, communications, essential supplies, and clear local response plans. Most importantly, they are community led spaces, ready to support whānau when help is needed.

Preparedness is not about reacting in crisis, it’s about doing the mahi beforehand so communities can respond with confidence, dignity, and care.

Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the weather today. To the local teams on the ground, thank you for the work you are doing. We stand with you and are here to support as needed.

Kia kaha, kia manawanui.

Omanu Primary School sits within the Mt Maunganui tsunami high-risk zone, and they’ve taken proactive steps to protect their community. Together with Sarah and Matt, we designed an easy-to-carry evacuation backpack for each of their 25 classrooms, providing students and teachers with essential items along with a handbook outlining the school’s evacuation plan.

It’s inspiring to see more kura leading the way in disaster preparedness. If your school or community is ready to take up the challenge, we’d love to kōrero about how we can support you.

Kia kaha Omanu Primary School!
