We Chase Shadows: twenty seven Kāpiti readers took one home this week.

The three this coast fell for, in the order you bought them:

1. We Chase Shadows by Richard Osman. Not close. Over a hundred at the counter.
2. Did I Ever Tell You This? by Sam Neill. His own story, told the way only he tells it.
3. Flashpoint by Wilbur Smith. For the reader who wants the big one.

All three are stacked at the counter. Come in Friday or Saturday and take one home. Half an hour down the coast from Levin or Ōtaki, and the parking is free.

Tag the person who has read every Richard Osman. Have you started We Chase Shadows yet?

The Newer World by Sebastian Barry landed this week, with two friends.

1. The Newer World by Sebastian Barry. If you read Old God's Time, you already know.
2. Cold Sunset by William Boyd. The Any Human Heart man, back with a new novel.
3. Situated by Angela Duckworth. From the author of Grit, for the non-fiction reader in the house.

All three are on the new arrivals table by the door, ten deep on the Boyd, so come in this week and be first. Forty five minutes from Wellington, the train stops at the mall, and parking is free.

Send this to the friend who reads the reviews and never buys the book. Which of the three do you want first?

It is Father's Day. Four books the kids can read to him.

1. The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr. Still the best out loud.
2. Superworm by Julia Donaldson. Impossible to read badly.
3. The Little Kiwi Builder by Minky Stapleton. Made here, and all about doing things with your hands.
4. Where is it?? by Ned Barraud. A wildlife hunt, so it turns into a beach walk after.

The kids corner is clear on Sunday mornings. Let them choose their own, half the fun. Otaki is twenty minutes, and worth the drive for a kids corner this size. Parking is free.

Send this to the grandparent coming for lunch. Which one gets read in the silliest voice at your place?

Father's Day is tomorrow. Here are four he will actually read.

1. The Chief and the Empire by Eugene Bingham. For the one who still talks about that game.
2. A Bushman's Book of Yarns by Sam Gibson. Sixteen on the shelf, and they will go.
3. 20 Great Wellington Day Walks by Murray Doughty. A present and a plan in one.
4. Hope Rises by David Baldacci. For the dad who gets through a thriller a week.

Tell us what he is like and we will find it in two minutes. You cannot do that online. Free parking outside, and twenty five minutes from Whitby and Plimmerton.

Screenshot this now. Send it to the sibling who has also forgotten.

Which one is his?

Dungeon Crawler Carl book one and two, on the shelf tonight.

Where to start: book one, tonight. If you have been putting it off, that is the whole problem solved. No cliffhanger, no waiting on a reorder, no driving home with half a series.

Also in: The Neverfear by Katherine Rundell, and Vow of Eternal Night by Lily Crozier if you want a new realm rather than a new series.

The fantasy bay is stacked. Come stand in front of it, the only honest way to choose. Free parking, and we are half an hour up the coast from Porirua.

Tag the friend who keeps promising to start Carl. Which realm are you in this weekend?

Our September club pick is Sophie, Standing There by Meg Mason.

Seventeen on the shelf, which means your whole club can start together this month. That almost never happens.

Three questions to get you going:
1. Is Sophie brave, or just stuck?
2. Who in this book is telling the truth about her?
3. Would you have said something in that first chapter?

Ask at the counter and we will bring in as many copies as your club needs. They are on the fiction table now, seventeen deep. Worth the drive from the Hutt to start a month together.

Screenshot the questions and take them to your next meeting. Send this to whoever runs your club.

What is your club reading this month?

Four novels our booksellers cannot agree on.

1. The Secrets We Hide by Karin Slaughter. Half of us think it is her best.
2. The Governor by Lynda La Plante. Old school crime, done properly.
3. The Calamity Club by Kathryn Stockett. The one that starts the argument.
4. The Midnight Train by Matt Haig. You will love it or throw it.

All four are on the shelf today, out on the fiction table, so nobody goes home empty handed. Forty five minutes up the line from Wellington and the train stops near the door. Parking is free.

Screenshot this for your next book club. Send it to the friend who always picks badly.

Which one are we wrong about?

Father's Day is next Sunday, and The Thing About Dads exists.

1. The Thing About Dads by Deborah Frenkel. Funny, warm, honest about dads.
2. Where is Hairy Maclary? by Lynley Dodd. Flaps to lift, and Dodd is a religion here.
3. Knock Knock by Deano Yipadee. The one you read in a silly voice.
4. Dazzlehands by Sacha Cotter. Made here, and it sparkles.

Save this for the card aisle panic. We keep the kids corner clear on a Sunday, so come in and let them choose their own. Make a morning of it, the beach is ten minutes away.

Send this to the grandparent who always asks what to get. Which one gets read at your place every night?

Four true stories, and Be Brave is where to start.

1. Be Brave by Barbara Dreaver. Thirty years reporting the Pacific.
2. The Hollows Boys by Peta Carey. A New Zealand story you have not heard.
3. Lucky You're Tough by Ron Crosby. Hard men, hard grounds, our own history.
4. Night of Power by Robert Fisk. The last word from the Middle East.

Start here if you want real lives instead of another thriller. They are out together on the history table, come see them this weekend. Worth the drive from the Hutt, and easy to make a day of it.

Show this to the person who says nothing ever happens here. Which true story has stayed with you?

If you liked A Court of Thorns and Roses, read these next. 🐉

1. A Court of Mist and Fury. Book two, and the one that converts people for good.
2. Malachite by Ashley Andersen. Slow burn, sharp edges, new to the bay.
3. The Seven Rings by Nora Roberts. Book three, and the trilogy finally lands.

Read them in that order and your whole September is sorted. All three are face out in the fantasy bay, come find them tonight or Saturday. It is worth the drive up the coast for the depth of that bay alone.

Tag the realm reader in your group chat. Which series are you halfway through right now?
