Bird of the Year 2026 voting starts on the 4th September. It's the silly season for the bird world, um er from at New Zealand's conservation perspective.

In 2021 a bat won Bird of the Year. It caused such a stir that the birds flocked together to solve any mammal's future attempt to enter the competition again. New this year, to prevent a Bat amongst the Pigeons scenario again; birds now have to be part of a Party.

Below are some candidates for The Shore Birds Party. The Party manu-festo is "It's a shore thing". The Shore Birds Party are big on diversity. Their candidates include all wetland, coastal, riverbed and lakeside birds. Any bird that is a water chick is welcome.

So while the pop-up store trees are being put together (we'll let you know where later this month) we'll be keeping a close eye on how our feathered friends' election is going.

Anyway not that we are going on about it, but why don't the mammals create a NZ Endemic Mammal of the Year competition? Chances are fairly high a bat will win.

Ring in Christmas.

Bells have a long association with Christmas.

Bells symbolise joy and festivity. They are the sound of happiness.

Twice a year at midnight the Church bells ring to announce midnight mass. Christmas and Easter.

For centuries bells across the world would ring, often from the highest building in the area to mark the time of day, announce special visitors or herald in important festivities. Bells were a way to connect and communicate to the community.

Santa jingles his sleigh bells from roof tops.

Hand bells are often rung in choirs when singing Christmas carols.

There are many Christmas songs about bells and incorporating the sound of bells.

Ornamental and functional bells are hung on Christmas trees.

Bells were used in pagan rituals at winter festivals with the purpose of protecting people from evil spirits ... and possibly to scare away wild animals!

In Medieval times church towers would ring bells to mark the passing hours.

Since we are nerding out on bells. The Medieval Latin word for bell was "clocca" which the modern word "clock' comes from.

Bells hold so much significance that many leading luxury brands have annual collectable Christmas bells.

One of our favourite Christmas series is the Christmas Collectors range from Hutschenreuter. This year the theme is Christmas Feast. The nostalgic imagery is wholesome and quirky.

This year the small music box is of a lady proudly holding a purple cabbage. The imagery continues onto the annual porcelain bell depicting the same lady chopping the purple cabbage. This could possibly be the only Christmas bell in the world with a purple cabbage on it! Hutschenreuther Christmas designs are unique and outstanding in their originality.

The whole family is helping with the Christmas feast. Grandad is shown on the cup & saucers and mugs mixing the cookie dough. The porcelain ball shows a kitchen in chaos, with a man holding a string of sausages and a dachshund joining the preparations.

The series is now available to view on our website. Many items in this range are indent only. Items are shipped via sea freight so order now to arrive in time for Christmas.

A generational heirloom Christmas decoration collection takes time, intention and action.

Time. Add one (or one for each member of the family!) decoration each year to your Christmas tree.

Intention. Choose if you are going to have a theme eg gold and crystal. Or choose a decoration to mark an event that happen during the year. Eg new home or holiday. Themed trees make the decision easier. Ad-hoc trees are great family trees and gives each person a freedom of choice for their decoration.

Action. The indent collection of Georg Jensen festive ornaments are now available to order. Stock of some items are in transit. However, if your theme is silver the palladium ornaments are indent (factory) order only. Now is the time to order them so we have time to sea-freight them from Europe.

Gift. If there is a new grandchild in the family why not start a collection for them now. When they move into their own home in decades to come they will have a tree full of memories from you.

Available to order until apx mid-July is an opportunity to order baubles in pack sets from the suppler (packs from only 6x to 24x) These indent order sets are at a pack discount for. A great way to bulk out your tree at a good price.

A roll of ribbon goes a long way on a Christmas tree. Then after Christmas it packs away into a small space.

If you are looking for a special ribbon to add to your theme. Order now from over 100 designs available from factory. Indent ordering is available for a limited time only. Minimum order is only one roll. Lengths are from 3mtr to 25mtr. Widths are from 18mm to 460mm.

While Santa is on holiday it's a great time to do a little organising.

This is our second favourite time of year. The first is Christmas time of course! The NZ Bird of the Year voting starts on Monday 15th September. Who's feathers will be ruffled and who will win?

New additions to our NZ Sparkly decoration range are due to arrive shortly. A delightful Little Blue Penguin and a dynamic Royal Northern Albatross.

For every NZ Sparkly bird sold in 2025, Galtons Christmas World will donate $1 to the Royal Albatross Centre in Dunedin.
