Our dog pack is back up to two! Although you never fill the gap that one dog leaves, miraculously there's always room for another. So this is the new team, Trevor and Molly, they're both young so they're behind a fence, but as they age and become less bouncy the gate can be opened for human and furry friends. Trevor is a Huntaway x and Molly is 'Cattledog' x. We went to Picton to meet Molly with Trev and they got along well. Two weeks on and Trev is in love 🩷 They're both fixed, so it's platonic and gorgeous to see. Whether they're running, wrestling, sleeping or just sniffing around, they're together. Molly has a very sweet cuddly nature and learning the house rules well. Trevor is a good teacher and has Huntaway 'smarts', he's continually amazing us with his curiosity and understanding. Molly has energy for short bursts, but Trev can go all day! We have room to look after a couple of dogs if anyone is needing some doggy day care, They might be too clumsy for small dogs yet as they're both just over 1yr, but if your medium to large family member needs a run, Trevs your dog (and Molly for half the day!)

The Magnolias are flowering again and they're quite photogenic. Pictured are Brixton Belle, Genie, Strawberry Fields, Billowing Cloud, Soulangeana and Old Port buds all 1.5m to 3m tall. Jane Platt stellata 1.5m. Prices from $95 to $155. Come and check them out!

I know a lot of you are familiar with Rosie, we sadly lost her a couple of weeks ago😢 She made it to 11 years, but cancer caught up with her. We were heart broken, and so soon after Dash. We have planted a Cryptomeria Japonica on her, she loved standing in the hedge listening to buglife. She was a unique little fat dog with the wiggliest tail. Rosie was everyone's friend and we miss her dearly.

This lovely pair of Fraxinus griffithii, or evergreen ash are 1.9 metres tall. They'll get to 7 metres eventually. $110 each, 2 only

We've had a pretty sad couple of weeks, with a heavy heart I have to let you know Dash passed away. He didn't quite make his 16th birthday, the lovely old boy. Thanks to Vet Life Motueka for coming out to the house. We planted a Dogwood Stokes Pink on his grave. We will miss him dearly😢😔
Rosie was extremely subdued and very listless. We took her to the SPCA in Nelson to meet a new possible buddy and we have adopted Trevor, a 1 year old Huntaway. He's made Rosie (and us all) smile again. He's very cuddly and learning all the new rules fast. He has a Huntaway voice and will learn to use it at appropriate times as he gets used to his new routine and family. Until then we have sealed in a yard for him. He will call out for a pat from behind the fence no doubt

I've germinated some Irish Moss and put them in 6 pack punnets. It's great for edges, around pavers or anywhere there's a gap to keep out the weeds and it's a perennial, so it'll be around as long as you require it. It's one of those plants that's nice in its own right, but brilliant to use as the background to other plants. I've always thought of white flowered plants as the page behind the picture, well Irish Moss has the same effect in my eyes. There are similar options for different situations and styles like scleranthus, chamomile, ground covering thyme or alpine phlox.
Have you ever had issues trying to keep the dead spots out of your scleranthus? Try walking on them or firming them down with your foot or sitting on them occasionally. The dead spot starts as the plant expands and forces the foliage away from the ground, so show it who's boss!

Welcome to all of you who are new to The Plant Barn!
This week the Malus Arrow Gold caught my eye. Such a pretty flash of yellow as the days have become chilly and they have blossom in late winter/early spring as well. They're a good choice for easy care summer shade. We also have 'ioensis plena' and 'Barbara Ann'
