Round 2!!!

Back Country won the first taste test, so in round 2 we’re introducing Firepot! New into Coppins, but with a strong pedigree. We will be cooking up their pasta bolognaise varieties in the shop on Saturday. Pop in, have a bite and cast your vote!!

We will do a vegetarian taste test next time, after several requests. 🍆

WHITEBAIT SEASON OPENS TOMORROW — MOTUEKA RIVER!

There’s plenty of local buzz building for opening day, and the conditions are looking promising.

THE FRESH IS ON
Recent rain through the Motueka catchment has pushed a good fresh down the river. That extra flow can help encourage whitebait to move into the river mouth, while the slightly coloured water may also give fish more confidence to run closer to the banks.

OPENING DAY TIDES — MOTUEKA

Low Tide: 6:07am — 0.6m
High Tide: 12:16pm — 4.1m
Low Tide: 6:08pm — 0.6m

The morning incoming tide should be well worth watching, with another potentially productive period in the couple of hours leading into the 12:16pm high tide.

☀️ WEATHER OUTLOOK

A few showers are expected before dawn, then conditions should improve through Tuesday.

Southwesterlies are expected, easing later in the day.

It’ll be a cool start, so make sure you’ve got plenty of warm layers.

2026 WHITEBAIT RULES — QUICK GUIDE

✅ Season: 1 September – 30 October

✅ Fishing hours: 5:00am – 8:00pm

✅ From daylight saving on 27 September:
6:00am – 9:00pm

✅ Maximum net length: 3.5m

✅ Maximum net mouth: 4.5m measured around the inside of the frame

✅ Maximum screen length: 3m total

✅ Maximum total fishing gear: 6m

✅ Only one net at a time

✅ Fishing gear must not occupy more than ¼ of the width of the waterway

✅ Fixed fishing gear must be at least 20m apart

✅ There is no minimum separation between scoop or drag nets

✅ Nets must be kept at least 20m away from weirs, culverts, groynes, outfalls, confluences, tidegates and floodgates

✅ Whitebaiting is permitted in tidal waters only

❌ Do not fish above designated back pegs

❌ No fishing from bridges or boats

❌ No fishing in whitebait refuges, national parks or public reserves

Remember: your gear must be actively monitored while you are fishing.

With a fresh in the river, good tidal movement and improving weather, opening day could be a cracker!
