Lauren Roche and Sophie Rogers have both written glorious tales of love and loss in the Otago goldfields. Lauren’s newly released novel Julia Eichardt, A Life of Grit and Grace follows Eichardt on a path from famine-ravaged Ireland to Queenstown’s iconic hotel, forged by fierce determination and unbreakable spirit. Set in Alexandra in 1866, Sophie’s novel Nightshades and Paperwhites is a heartbreaking tale of two immigrants from different cultures falling in love in a time steeped in racism, prejudice and judgement.

Dunedin writer and teacher Maxine Alterio chairs this session.
