Tonight I sat with my 8 & 9 year old and went through the Matariki puzzle we made. It took about half an hour for them to become pros 😎

This puzzle was carefully thought out- the placement of each whetu (star) is correctly laid out to reflect the constellation, pictures are etched in on the backboard to support tamariki remembering which whetu represents what, the different colours of each piece can help trigger recall, and our matariki kowhaiwhai design that runs through all the puzzle pieces and backboard is to offer that little bit more support if tamariki are still struggling✨️

This short reel showcases how you can use this as a learning tool in different ways. This is real and raw filming with no extra takes, just some edited out bits of my other son coughing (mauiui season 😫) lol

We didnt really showcase this puzzle last year 😅 and as a kaiako, I know how effective this rauemi is in supporting retention of matauranga for our tamariki, especially if they're tutus like my son Pounamu-James 🥴🥴

These are currently 'made to order' and we cut, paint and sand these all from our workshed at home 😊

STILL ACCEPTING CUSTOM BAUBLE AND PEPEHA ORDERS + request this week only for your chosen colour palette for our Tiki Puzzles ✨️✨️

I have literally finished all orders and have some time on my hands 🙌

Any orders placed this working week will be sent out next Monday at the latest.

According to NZPOST guidelines, that's still plenty of time to get your order from me here in Rotorua, to anywhere in New Zealand to you before Christmas 🥳🫶

I have so much fun cutting and painting these tiki puzzles, it’s actually satisfying seeing the colours come together at the end ☺️

The next batch of 12pc tiki puzzles are now available on our website.

It’s a great tool to promote kōrero between you and your tamaiti. The abstract layout of the tiki can be quite challenging and really gets the problem solving cogs going- as an extra challenge I get my boys to try and put it together without the frame (and they do struggle!)

Conversation points we use in our whare in both English and Māori when playing with the puzzle pieces:

⭐️ order these from smallest to biggest/lightest to darkest
⭐️Naming colours/finding same colours around the room
⭐️Maui /Matau (left/right)
⭐️Counting
⭐️Grouping & Catergorising by classification (e.g colours, body parts, shapes)
⭐️Naming/personifying the tiki by relating it to a tupuna/Atua to generate deeper kōrero

Best part of this pakihi stuff is having the resources and acquired knowledge to create random things for the kids off the cuff 🙌🏽🫣 Soooo officially taking orders for 67 necklaces as of today 😂😂

Just kidding🙃 it didn’t take too long to whip up for the rā whānau of my 9 year old- was def worth it though, he thought he was sooo coool at kura 😆😎🎂
