At Parawai, Pūkākī was nurtured by his Kuia Parehina. He later settled there with Ngāpuia, raised his children and cultivated a legacy that continues through his uri today.

Pūkākī stands as a doorway to te ao tawhito—the world of our tūpuna. Yet his legacy is not confined to the past. It endures through our whakapapa, our reo, our waiata, our haka and the way Ngāti Whakaue continues to gather as one.

This is Whakanuia—nurturing what our tūpuna planted, celebrating who we are and carrying their legacy forward for generations to come.

The kōrero of Taeotū reminds us that the strength of our people is also found in manaakitanga, whanaungatanga and whakapapa.

Through compassion and connection, whakapapa continued and generations flourished.

That same whakaaro lives within Whakanuia — bringing the descendants of Whakaue together, strengthening our connections and carrying them forward for our tamariki and mokopuna.

Te Rangiiwaho called upon his people to bind themselves together and hold fast to Rotorua.

Generations later, Whakanuia continues that whakaaro — bringing Ngāti Whakaue together through whakapapa, kapa haka and whanaungatanga.

“Whiria te kaha, tua makatia, e motu honoa, purutia Rotorua.”
