In case you missed the short video earlier this week, we've put together a breakdown of the process our bait painting team go through.
Our blanks are cut, pressed, and stamped locally in Katikati, Bay of Plenty. This ensures accurate lure shapes, uniform scale detail, and consistent dimensions, most importantly delivering the reliable swimming action Kilwell lures are known for.
Each Kilwell lure undergoes our meticulous painting process, which can take over 5 days. Starting with a rich base coat, multiple layers are carefully applied to build depth, durability, and vibrant colour characteristics Kiwi anglers have come to look for.
Once the base colours are approved, the finer details are added. Elements such as red fin tips, spots/dots, eyes and stripes bring each lure to life. Decals like the eyes and flash prism stickers are then applied for added realism or attraction. The final part for the paint room is the team adding a protective, clear gloss lacquer.
Finished lures are passed to the rigging team, where they are fitted with split rings, swivels, and American-made Eagle Claw hooks. This ensures a free-swimming, tangle-resistant lure, ready for action straight out of the packet. A final quality assurance check is done to ensure there are no chips, bubbles, or paint imperfections before being sent out.
Proudly made locally and proven on the local water, by local anglers.
