It’s Tulips season 💕 This is our first year growing Tulips in crates, thanks to our amazing neighbour’s we have access to their huge greenhouse! Meaning we have nice early blooms! It’s so nice to have blooms when everything else is looking pretty dormant this year. We’re hoping the frosts are killing off the bad bugs and things will warm up soon for a fab spring!

A couple of winter corsages and buttonholes out the door today for the Bream Bay College Ball. This number featuring my favourite winter foliage and flowers, Hellebores, Lilly of the Valley, Nigella Pods. Eucalyptus and spray roses. 💕

A little peek in to our Tulip soil prep and planting 🙌🙌

Here’s the formula:

1/2 Sandy Loam soil
1/2 Compost
Approx 10-15 cups pumice

= beautiful free draining, soft bulb planting medium

Full disclosure - this is the first time I’ve grown tulips in crates like this so it is still a bit of a wait and hope process.

80 bulbs per crate, no egg carton spacing, just tip em in and spread out in one layer…

I was super happy with the bulb quality this year too!

I plant out big over winter to make the most of the cooler and wetter shoulder seasons. My favourite varieties to overwinter are:

- Stock
- Snapdragon
- Ranunculus
- Sweetpeas
- Dianthus / sweetwilliam
- Statice
- Larkspur
- Corncockle
- Ammi / False Queen Anne’s Lace

Our farm is starting to slow down as we turn another season corner. The Chrysanthemums are in flush and an absolute life saver this time of year! And the Poppies are too sweet 🥰

We’ll be hanging in there until Mothers Day! And then it’s time for next season prep! I’m excited to try my hand at Tulips this Spring, just hoping I haven’t overdone it on the quantities 😅
