🥕 Most anglers catch gurnard by accident.

The anglers who consistently catch them are usually doing something different.

They’re targeting them on purpose.

Our latest guide covers where to find gurnard around New Zealand, the conditions to look for, effective baits, proven rigs, and why colour can help make your bait easier to find.

We’ve also included the thinking behind our new Carrot Chaser Pack, a collection of six colours selected specifically for anglers targeting gurnard.

Clear water, dirty water, bright sunshine, low light, dawn, dusk, deep water, shallow harbours… fish don’t see the same thing in every situation.

That’s why the range exists.

Last week three lads from Pukekohe were fishing the beach and got chatting to KC about local conditions, rig setups and what works around our harbours and mangroves 🎣

He showed them a few Snapper Candy options and suggested they give Black Tiger a crack in the shallow mangrove channels and green harbour water.

A few days later they stopped into the shop, grabbed some Black Tigers and sent through this footage 👌

Black Tiger has become a bit of a weapon in harbour systems because the darker profile creates a strong silhouette underwater. In green harbour water, mangrove edges and lower visibility conditions, darker colours often stand out better and hold their shape more clearly than lighter colours.

It helps create definition around the bait, making it easier for fish to detect and track what they’re feeding on.

Just goes to show that visibility isn’t always about the brightest colour in the packet. Sometimes it’s about creating the strongest contrast underwater.

And make sure you watch right to the end… 👀

We’ve seen crabs, squid, shellfish and all sorts come out of snapper stomachs over the years…

But a pūkeko foot? 🦶😂

That’s definitely a first. What’s the strangest thing you’ve seen in a fishes stomach?

Most anglers still choose rig colours based on what looks good in the packet.
Underwater, fish are reacting more to contrast, silhouette and visibility 🎣

That’s why Sour Bite has become such a versatile foundation colour in the Snapper Candy range.

Its rich deep ruby & purple profile helps hold strong silhouette and definition underwater, especially in green water, dirty surf, heavy wash and low light where lighter colours can start blending into the water column.

The chartreuse striping adds subtle separation without losing that darker profile.

But where Sour Bite really stands out is when it’s paired beside brighter UV Candy’s pictured here like Tequila Sunrise.

The darker profile helps the brighter UV colour stand out harder underwater, creating a cleaner contrast edge and a more defined visual strike zone near the bait.

Think of Sour Bite as the shadow that makes brighter colours pop.

Without contrast, brightness can become noise underwater.
With contrast, your rig gains shape, definition and visibility.

That’s the part a lot of bait anglers overlook.

Sour Bite isn’t just for dirty water either. Strong contrast still matters in clear water, overcast conditions and aggressive feeding situations where fish need to detect bait quickly.

Don’t just choose colours.
Build contrast into your rigs.

One darker Candy.
One UV, glow or reflective Candy beside it.

Paired with purpose. Designed with intent 🍭🎣

From the black sand beaches of the West Coast NZ…

To white sand reef systems over in Western Australia often with shallow reef ledges and reef fingers extending offshore
To pebble beaches in the South Island getting smashed by wash and swell 🎣

One thing stays the same… anglers everywhere are starting to think differently about how their bait actually looks underwater.

Dirty water.
Milky surf.
Clear bluebird days.
Heavy wash.
Low light.

Different coastlines. Different conditions. Different fish behaviour.

What works on a white sand beach in WA might completely disappear in the churned-up black sand surf of the West Coast.

And that’s the part more anglers are starting to figure out.

Colour isn’t just about confidence anymore.
It’s about visibility, contrast, and helping fish actually find your bait underwater.

Huge appreciation to all the Kiwi and Aussie anglers sending through photos lately 🇳🇿🇦🇺

Seeing Snapper Candys being used across so many different coastlines and conditions , helping anglers target and catch such a wide range of species is what drives us to keep educating anglers alike to gain a better understanding, fish the conditions & build smarter rigs

Less than a metre of water.Dark green harbour conditions. One Snapper Candy Black Tiger 🎣

That’s all KC’s been running lately.

Harbour fishing’s a completely different game to surfcasting or deeper straylining. In dark green tidal water, fish are feeding more off silhouette, movement and contrast than bright flashy colours alone.

That’s exactly why Black Tiger works so well.

The dark profile creates strong silhouette underwater while the striping and subtle UV properties help fish track the bait more naturally in moving water.

KC’s usually only running one Candy per hook trace too. In less than a metre of water, massive buoyancy and oversized setups often aren’t needed. Instead, one Candy helps:• Slightly lift and separate the bait• Improve natural movement• Create a subtle strike zone near the hook• Keep the presentation clean and believable

That’s the part a lot of people miss. Snapper Candy’s aren’t just about bright colours. They’re about helping fish actually find and track your bait underwater while still keeping things natural 🎣
