Hidden inside a massive macrocarpa log — nearly 2.5 metres in diameter — these giants were waiting.

Hand-forged metal spikes, buried deep in the timber and completely grown over for more than a century. They definitely took their toll on the sawmill blades.

We estimate these trees were planted in the late 1800s by early settlers, who must have driven the spikes in back then — and over time, the tree simply grew around them.

An incredible reminder that every old tree carries its own history… sometimes forged in steel.

Since uncovering these spikes, we’ve milled this ancient macrocarpa into a range of beautiful pieces — including our recently added Rustic Natural Edge Boards.
