Welcome to 2025! And what better way to bring in a new year than with a new design? iO Peel is the outcome of a collaboration between two Bay of Plenty design houses; Maker and The Earnest Workshop.

Our new floor lamp brings together two unique products - Mat Macmillan's iO Tall Lamp, taken to new heights by Dan Gillingham's steam-bent ash 'Peel' legs. The outcome is a stunning design piece that showcases an almost lost tradition of craftsmanship. You can enjoy the process in this beautiful video: https://vimeo.com/138473978

Looking back over 10 years of MAKER. I

In the early days I was trying out all kinds of designs. I really enjoyed this creative process. Even though many of them would never be cost-viable, they were all leading somewhere.

These were a set of sushi platters inspired by the natural cupping effect of 'crown cut' timber, so the gentle curve in each plate is by natural distortion, rather than shaping by tools. They never made the shops, but we still use them in our home today!

First cab off the rank! It's over ten years since I started MAKER in a small workshop at our rural home near Tauranga. Back then I was planning to make all kinds of things (I'll be posting some of these in the coming days). In the end, it was this little gem that kicked off. This is the very first prototype iO lamp, just one of many ideas at the time. Little did I know where this gem would take me. It's ben an incredible journey so far - thanks for supporting and sharing it with me!
