Another stunning winter’s day at Villa Ridge

It’s always a bit of a treat lifting the frost cloth in the morning and seeing the Vireyas and Rhododendrons putting on such a beautiful show.

Their bright flowers look incredible against those crisp winter mornings and high blue skies — a great reminder that the garden can still have plenty of colour at this time of year.

Pop in and have a look while they’re flowering — they really are looking fantastic at the moment.

Plant now for a delicious summer harvest!

Now is a great time to plant Camarosa strawberries, giving them plenty of time to establish strong roots before spring flowering begins. A well-established plant is better prepared to support plenty of flowers and a generous crop of berries from late spring into summer.

Camarosa is a popular, vigorous variety that produces large, firm, deep-red fruit with a rich strawberry flavour. It is a reliable cropping variety with generally good disease resistance, although good airflow, consistent watering and clean growing conditions are still important for keeping plants healthy.

They are incredibly versatile and grow beautifully in garden beds, raised planters, pots, troughs and hanging baskets. Choose a sunny position, enrich the soil with compost, and feed with a strawberry or berry fertiliser as new growth and flowers develop.

10cm Camarosa plants — $5 each or 5 for $20

Plant now and start looking forward to fresh strawberries, desserts, smoothies and homemade strawberry ice cream this summer! 🍓

Gardenias are in at Villa Ridge!

We currently have Gardenia ‘Florida’ and Gardenia ‘Golden Magic’ available for $17 each.

Gardenia ‘Florida’ is a classic evergreen shrub with glossy dark-green foliage and beautifully fragrant, creamy-white double flowers. It grows into a dense, rounded shrub of roughly 1–1.5 metres and works beautifully as an informal hedge, garden feature, or statement plant near an entrance.

Gardenia ‘Golden Magic’ offers something a little different. Its highly fragrant flowers open creamy white before gradually changing to a rich golden yellow, often giving you several flower colours on the plant at once. It develops into a compact, bushy shrub of around 1–1.5 metres, making it ideal for pots, courtyards and sheltered garden beds.

Both varieties prefer a warm, sheltered position with morning sun or dappled light, along with rich, well-drained and slightly acidic soil. Plant them near a patio, pathway, doorway or outdoor entertaining area where you can really enjoy their beautiful perfume. Keep the soil consistently moist, but never waterlogged.

Why plant your Camarosa strawberries now?

Winter is a great time to get strawberry plants established. Planting now gives them time to develop strong roots before spring growth begins, helping produce healthier plants and a better summer crop.

Prepare the soil with compost or well-rotted organic matter, then use a strawberry fertiliser that is high in potassium. Once fresh growth and flowers begin to appear, continue feeding every 4–6 weeks, following the directions on your chosen fertiliser. Potassium helps encourage flowering, fruit development and flavour.

Camarosa strawberries generally begin flowering through spring, with fruit developing from late spring into summer. Plant them in a sunny position, keep the soil consistently moist, and remove unnecessary runners while the plants are fruiting so more energy goes into producing big, juicy berries.

Why plant your Camarosa strawberries now?

Winter is an ideal time to get strawberry plants established in New Zealand. Planting now gives them time to develop strong roots before spring growth begins, helping support healthier plants and a heavier summer crop. ([Tui Garden][1])

Prepare the soil with compost or well-rotted organic matter, then use a strawberry fertiliser containing plenty of potassium. Once fresh growth and flowers appear, continue feeding every **4–6 weeks**, or use a suitable liquid berry food more regularly according to the label. Potassium helps encourage flowering, fruit development and flavour rather than excessive leafy growth. ([Yates][2])

Camarosa plants generally begin flowering through spring, with fruit developing from late spring into summer. Keep them in a sunny position, water consistently and remove unnecessary runners while fruiting so the plant can put more energy into producing big, juicy berries.
