Night 8 – normal service has resumed 🙌

After an early start to make our tour time, it was straight to the dock and onto the boat to experience Milford Sound — often called the 8th wonder of the world.

Hard to say no to that.

And to be fair… it delivered.

It was rainy, but in Milford that’s actually what you want. The rain brings the place to life, with waterfalls appearing everywhere, pouring down the cliffs from all angles.

We got properly soaked, took in some unreal views, grabbed a few snaps… and timed it pretty well.

One key thing with Milford — get in early, get out early.

By late morning, it starts to get busy. A lot of people come in on day trips from Queenstown, mainly by bus, and with around 5,000 visitors a day, it fills up quickly.

There are loads of tour companies to choose from, and depending on the season, you can either book in advance or grab a spot on the day at the kiosk (worth keeping an eye on the weather if you can).

After the tour, we headed back to Te Anau for the night and decided to play it safe this time…

A proper campsite.

No surprises, fewer mozzies, and a much more relaxed setup.

Dinner was simple — crackers, cheese and a couple of G&T’s to round off the day.

Milford Sound verdict:
An amazing experience and 100% worth doing…

But one of those places where once you’ve seen it, you probably don’t need to go back 👍

Night 7 – reality check… the outdoors isn’t always glamorous 😅

Up until now, we’ve had it pretty sweet… so it felt like we were due a slightly more “character-building” night.

The plan was to head towards Milford Sound — one of New Zealand’s most famous natural attractions. It’s a stunning fjord in Fiordland National Park, known for its dramatic cliffs, waterfalls and unreal scenery. Definitely one of those bucket list places.

It’s a bit of a drive though, so with a little one on board we decided to break it up.

About 20 minutes past Te Anau, we found an incredible little spot right by the lake. Proper peaceful, beautiful views… everything you’d want.

It was spitting with rain a bit, so for the first time this trip we actually cooked and ate inside Tonya — which was a nice change.

Stir fry on the menu 🤩

We kept it an early night as we’d booked an early morning tour to try and beat the crowds at Milford.

Now… here’s where things took a turn.

The location itself was great.
But the sand flies and mosquitoes were next level.

I was expecting a few… but this was a full-on invasion.

So although the spot was a success in terms of views and setup… it definitely wasn’t the most comfortable night we’ve had.

Location: Great
Experience: Slightly under attack

Character building… we move 😂

Night 1 – and we’re already in the middle of nowhere… exactly how we like it.

After picking up our camper from in Christchurch, we met up with some friends who had flown over from Australia and hit the road for our first proper New Zealand drive.

The route? Arthur’s Pass. And what a way to start the trip.

Mountains everywhere you look, winding roads, huge open valleys… the kind of scenery that makes you pull over every five minutes just to take it in.

About two hours later, we reached our first stop of the trip: Klondyke Corner.

Which is quite literally in the middle of nowhere. One toilet. No crowds.Just mountains, fresh air and a whole lot of space.

Perfect.

Tonya the Toyota (our camper) is doing great so far, the company is even better, and dinner for night one was simple chicken wraps — which somehow taste better when you’re parked in the middle of the Southern Alps.

Only downside? It was a little chilly. But to be fair… it is autumn over here.

Location: 9/10Company: 10/10Accommodation: Tonya the Toyota doing her thing.

And for £15 for the night, we’d absolutely recommend it.

Not a bad way to start a New Zealand adventure.

30 hours of planes, airports, snacks, baby naps and a serious amount of luggage… and we’ve finally made it to New Zealand 🇳🇿

The adventure has officially begun.

For the next 4 weeks it’s me, Rowena and baby Maya exploring this incredible country. We’re starting with 2 weeks on the South Island, living out of our new home on wheels — Tonya the Toyota — before heading up to the North Island to continue the journey.

Expect plenty of exploring, questionable navigation decisions, amazing landscapes… and most likely a few moments where we ask ourselves whose idea it was to travel with a one-year-old 🤷🏻‍♂️🥴

Along the way we’ll be sharing the journey, some tips for anyone thinking about doing the same trip, and of course plenty of camp cooking setups.

And yes… I may have slightly overpacked because every single Nomads Kitchen product has made the trip with us 😏
If we’re cooking, eating or drinking somewhere beautiful, chances are one of them will be involved.

First stop: South Island adventures begin.

Let’s see what New Zealand has in store for

Cook anywhere.
Stay organised.

That’s the goal.

No digging through bags.
No loose sachets floating around.
No “where’s the salt?” moments mid-cook.

Everything in one place.
Compact. Lightweight. Ready when you are.

Because outdoor cooking shouldn’t feel like survival…
it should feel like freedom.

Nomads Kitchen — built for people who don’t stand still.

Spices don’t need to be complicated.

A few favourites.
Small, lightweight containers.
All kept together so you’re not digging around when the pan’s already hot.

Good food outdoors is usually just one pinch away.

Jumping on the bandwagon!!

Camping. Coffee. Gear. Growth charts (apparently).
Still the same idea though — building Nomads Kitchen around adventure, good food, and not taking ourselves too seriously along the way.

If this is what AI thinks we’re about, we’ll take it 🤝
Now back to the real world… have a good weekend y’all.

Some things just make sense outdoors.

Water you can trust.
Gear that gets clipped on, dropped in the snow, rinsed in the sea — and keeps going.
Moments that aren’t planned, but end up being the ones you remember most.

This is what we build for.
Not perfect setups.
Not pristine kitchens.

Just practical kit that moves with you.
From cold mountain mornings to salty coastal days — one bottle, a thousand different adventures.

Fill it up. Step outside.
See where the day takes you.
