On this day in 1948 the Idaho Department of Fish and Game relocated 76 beavers from Northwestern Idaho to Central Idaho by parachuting them down to the ground! After the end of WWII many Idaho's residents moved from the cities to the rural southwest, resulting in increased complaints about property damage by beavers. Beavers were crucial to the health of the wetlands but had reached low levels after overhunting for their fur. Beavers were already being relocated to the state and the program had been very successful. However, transporting beavers on land was expensive and had a high mortality rate. The beavers would get trapped, loaded onto trucks and delivered to a conservation officer, loaded onto another truck, then strapped onto a horse or mule to be sent over the mountainous areas. All this was very stressful for the beavers and many overheated. Then someone came up with the idea to fly them in and use leftover WWII parachutes and lid less boxes to get them safely to the ground. 75 of the 76 beavers survived, the one casualty was a beaver that forced its way out of the box while parachuting and fell to its death.
