This morning started with heartbreak. 💔

We lost Awhi’s puppies this week, and honestly, my heart was pretty heavy.

Then on the way to the shop I spotted what I thought was a roadside possum that was destined to become a custom hat. 💀🤣

Fast forward a few hours…

The “hat” is now wrapped in my feather down duvet, cuddling a hot water bottle, and I’m checking a tiny joey in the pouch every 20 minutes.

I swear this is the most Whenua Roots thing ever.

One minute you’re crying over puppies.
The next you’re running a possum maternity ward from your lounge.

Will the little joey survive?

I have no idea.

But if there’s one thing I’ve learned living on the whenua, it’s that every living thing deserves a chance.

Even if it is a pest. ❤️

So here we are…

A dead possum.
A hot water bottle.
A feather duvet.
A tiny fighter still wriggling away.

Life’s weird like that. 🌿🐾

And honestly… I wouldn’t have it any other way

💔 A tough start to the morning here at Whenua Roots.

After days of round-the-clock care, sleepless nights, warming cold puppies, helping them feed, and doing everything we could, we sadly lost Awhi’s litter.

Looking back, I believe the combination of cleft palates and the cold weather was simply too much for these little ones. What I do know is that Awhi did everything a good mum should do.

She fed her babies.
She cleaned them.
She kept them close.
She had plenty of milk.
She never stopped trying.

This morning she’s curled up on the blanket she shared with her puppies, catching up on some much-needed rest while we make sure she’s surrounded by love too. ❤️

Farm life can bring incredible highs, but sometimes it also brings heartbreak. Every one of these puppies mattered, and every one of them was loved.

Today is about looking after Awhi. 🐾❤️

🐾💔 A Little Heartbreak Behind the Scenes 💔🐾

This photo doesn’t tell the whole story.

Since 2am we’ve been up watching, warming, feeding, checking, worrying, and doing everything we can for Awhi and her babies.

Sometimes breeding isn’t all cute puppy photos and happy announcements. Sometimes it’s sleepless nights, tears, hard decisions, and heartbreak.

We’ve gone from a full litter to just one precious pup left.

Right now our focus isn’t on sales, content, or business. It’s on making sure Awhi and her last baby have every chance possible.

The little fighter in this photo has become very special to us already. Every feed, every suckle, every nap feels like a win.

To everyone who’s checked in, sent messages, and kept us in your thoughts — thank you. ❤️

For now, we’re taking it one hour at a time.

🐾 Awhi is being an amazing mama.
🐾 Pepe is still fighting.
🐾 And we’re not giving up.

Been sorting through the sheepskins and these rougher ones aren’t going to waste.

The dogs and puppies are about to be living their best lives while I’m over here sleeping on a mattress. 😂

Nothing gets wasted on the farm.
Meat in the freezer.
Bones for treats.
Skins for beds.

The dogs don’t know it yet, but winter just got an upgrade. 🐾❄️

🐾❤️ One Day Old Today ❤️🐾

Yesterday was a rollercoaster of excitement, nerves, worry, and very little sleep.

Today, Awhi is settled into motherhood with her six beautiful mokos tucked safely beside her. Watching her care for them, feed them, and keep them warm has completely melted my heart. 🥹

I spent half the night checking noses, counting puppies, listening for squeaks, and making sure everyone was feeding. This morning I finally took a breath and realised they’re doing exactly what newborn puppies should be doing… eating, sleeping, growing, and keeping Mum busy. ❤️

Awhi, you’re doing an amazing job.
