Presentation and Packaging:

MADINZ Presentation Boxes are crafted meticulously then hand painted with decorative motifs drawing on distinctive New Zealand themes. Legend is that Poutini was a taniwha, (a giant water being) swimming up and down the rough seas off Te Tai o Poutini protecting both the people and the spiritual essence (or mauri) of pounamu (greenstone).

Taniwha Poutini guards the mauri (life force or essence) within the treasured stone. The mana (spiritual force) of pounamu comes from Kahue (or Ngahue) an atua (God). Taniwha Poutini as protector of the stone is the servant of Kahue. Poutini from time to time used to venture further afield.

As with our glass items, all glass pieces are packed with utmost care, so you can be assured that they can be taken overseas with no problem. We can also gift wrap and bubble wrap to protect the gift wrapping, then write on the bubble the design so, you know what is inside.

Tekoteko

These figures were freestanding figures that stood on top of carved meeting houses. Most of these figures had a stance that represented a position in a haka, or a fighting stance, with a weapon. The purpose of the tekoteko was to overlook the forecourt in front of a carved house and challenge any visitors to the tribe. If the visitors were deemed to be friendly, tekoteko would then offer protection.

BAILER

The Maori canoe bailers are known by different names - Tata,  Tiheru and Ta wai. 

When the warrior assigned to the bailer was using it, he would sometimes accompany the task with an invocatory chant called a karakia tata. 

The pattern carved on the bailer is called Pakura which can also be found carved on the Tuangi ( the projecting edge of the rauawa ) on some of the large waka (canoes).  

The bailer was shaped to fit the bottom of the canoe hull and to float rather than submerge under the water.

HEI MATAU SCULPTURE

A skillful fisherman became a very important person in the tribe and his success was attributed to his hook whose ‘mana’ or presence pleased the spirits. Such a hook was given a personal name and was greatly treasured. Legend tells that the demi-God Maui used a hook made from his grandmother’s jawbone to fish the North Island of New Zealand from the depths of the sea.

The fishhook has several meanings including strength,
determination, good luck and safe travel across water. It is believed to bring peace, prosperity and good health.
This sculpture is an ideal corporate gift and also very
popular as a conference speakers’ gift or award.

(Chief’s Ceremonial Adze)

Toki is Maori for adze, Tangata means a Maori person.

Maori Wood Carvings are very distinctive and well recognised internationally. These traditionally styled and beautifully made wood
carvings are all hand carved from indigenous timber and New Zealand Pounamu.

A Toki Pou Tangata is a ceremonial adze worked from pounamu (New Zealand Jade) and lashed to a finely carved wooden handle.

Toki Pou Tangata were carried by a person of mana (prestige), high rank, and great leadership qualities. Perhaps the nearest equivalent in
European culture is the sceptre, used by kings as a symbol of rank and power.
