Healthy Monster!
What a beauty of a Snapper caught in our local waters (Don't worry this fish was not landed during, but rather, just before lock down no 2). This fish is exceptionally healthy and was put back after a quick picture. Estimated weight between 25 and 30 Lbs. It was caught on a small hook using squid for bait. Well done Peter T for a good catch & release!
For those of you that don't know, the large Snapper eat Kina and help maintain a healthy reef system. Without the large Snapper Kina can decimate a reef of plant life leaving behind what is called a Kina barren.

How to fish under level 3 !!!
Simply put you can only fish from the beach or the rocks! No boat fishing unfortunately but hey last time we were at level 3 those of you who got out, caught some really great fish. Snapper, Kowhai and Kingfish were all caught from the side. These were mostly targeted with a surf rod and reel combo however Kontiki's were also used and for the latest craze, fishing drones. Depending on the size of your wallet you can spend as little as $150 on a rod and reel, around $2700 on a drone with photo and video capabilities (Pro-fish In Stock) and up to about $4650 for a New Zealand manufactured Kontiki (In Stock) that won't crap out on you when you try and use it! Most important is you want back-up when you spend money.

Luckily got out on the boat before level 3!!
As we are manning the shop 6 days a week, Sundays are the only day we can venture onto the water. We picked a real bummer, big winds with showers, so tucked in close behind Kowhai and managed to snag some great Snapper. Put them all back baring 5 table sized morsels!
