Our September schedule is here! 💫

From chamber pop to Brazilian grooves, this month has something for everyone. 168 Quintet features some members of the Miro Holland Group and offers up something new with special guests and some east African rhythms 🇹🇿🎶

Both the Wellington Calling Open Mic and the Poetry Open Mic return, perhaps this will be your month to share something on the Undercurrent stage! Or perhaps you’ll bring your instrument along to a Swing Jazz Jam 🎷🎺

Don’t forget the weekly meditation on Wednesdays (5pm) or come throughout the week (Wed-Sun) to enjoy our warm atmosphere and range of books 📖

The Undercurrent presents Colleen Coco Collins!

Colleen Coco Collins [she/they] makes songs born of ache & scrawl, boon & study, ebb & surrender. Keys and wending vocals weave & gleam. PJ Harvey meets ghost notes meets littoral biophonies.

An interdisciplinary artist of Irish, French, and Odawa descent, Colleen works in songwriting, performance, poetry and visual arts. Her practice oscillates temporality, presumptions of sentience, subversion, rhythm, gesture, frequencies, the ouroboric, the orogenous, the peripatetic, love and the polyglottic. She lives littorally in rural Port Greville, Mi’kma’ki/Nova Scotia, Canada amidst crows, coyotes, grackles, bees, humpback, lichen and fox.

The Undercurrent presents Frying Funk!

Frying Funk are New Zealand’s top college jazz combo, having made 1st place in the combo sections of both Tauranga Jazz Festival and Manawatu Jazz competition with their electric blend of funk and jazz. Ridley Sheehan (guitar), Liam Struthers (drums), Izaac Bott (sax), Luken Robertson (keys) and Wilf Madle (bass) all provide funk grooves, ripping solos, and collective improv that makes every show unique.

The Undercurrent presents El Jagor!

Five friends with one shared goal to play some phat jams. Initially formed by necessity at school, now a fully fledged Jazz (adjacent) Quintet playing around Wellington since early last year.

Be sure to come witness El Jagor as they play a variety of tunes from different walks of life, from fusion to afrobeats. The band features Jago ‘Jagor’ Watson on Bass, on the keys is the amazing Logan Heppell, laying fresh beats on the drums is Ranu Wijesuriya. On the trumpet is the most elegant musician ever Sylvester Green and on the Saxophone is Cameron Boyle.

With a mix of line-up and instrumentation, there will be an explosive and spontaneous sound for anyone to enjoy! This group enjoys fusing classic jazz sound with modern rhythms and feel. Come along for a good time - Four-Dollar Fifty Jazz is a hell of a deal, and bang for your buck!

The Undercurrent presents the Wooden Box Band!

Wellington’s folk darlings bring their sparkling original music back to The Undercurrent on September 12. Many years of hard work, and writing and recording their songs paid off earlier this year when the band won the Aotearoa Folk Alliance’s Best Original Folk Album award. The winning album - Broken River - features in their set list of course with the soaring harmonies and intricate guitars and brass the recording’s known for. Recently recruited drummer Sean Barker will be armed with his new small kit so the six piece band can fit on the stage.

The sound of the Wooden Box Band has been compared to early Wilco, the Mamas and the Papas, and Woodstock acoustic bands.

DANI is a Wellington-based artist whose music moves through the haze of smoky chamber pop: intimate and cinematic, it makes you feel like a secret being told just to you.

DANI is a daydreamer who takes action. She soaks up the experience of life in lessons and finds the way to craft it into lyrics that would live as a reminder to be true to ourselves.

Join Dani and her chamber pop team:

A welcome incursion into our Sunday afternoon Jazz spot by these wonderfully talented musicians from the Victoria University School of Music: The Cowie Quartet are Cara and Eve (Violins), Solace on (Viola) and DJ (cello). You were all very brilliant. I hope I’ve got your names right, please correct any misspellings in the comments.
