The Undercurrent presents Emília e amigos!

Join me for my very first live performance!

With some of Dad’s blues band members (Fish Fry Blues Club) we have Dad (Cicero Cabral), Nick Van Dijk and Paul Webster and then some other friends too (Michael Duffy and Darryn Sigley)!

We’ll be bringing together a mix of jazz, blues, and old rock favourites. It’s a night of timeless music, soulful vocals, and great live entertainment in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Whether you’re a fan of smooth jazz, heartfelt blues, or psychedelic rock anthems, there’s something for everyone.

I’d love to share this special evening with family, friends, and music lovers alike. Come along, enjoy the music, and help make my first show with a live band one to remember. I can’t wait to see you there!

The Undercurrent presents Chutney!

CHUTNEY is Australia’s leading klezmer fusion band. They draw on their Eastern European and Middle Eastern heritage to play a spicy mix of original bangers and fresh takes on infectious dance tunes. Led by the unbridled virtuosity of the duelling violin and clarinet, the band hopscotches from folk to pop, jazz to tango, classical to funk, east to west.

CHUTNEY has taken the world music scene by storm, with their debut album Ajar, which won a triple Triple Gold Medal at the Global Music Awards. This is CHUTNEY’s New Zealand debut, and a night of passion, whimsy and high energy not to be missed!

The Undercurrent presents The Guiding Tones!

The Guiding Tones are an unconventional jazz trio based in Te Whanganui a Tara. Consisting of Vadim Fong on clarinet, Zylah Vivace on guitar, and Joseph Coleman on piano accordion, they bring unique instrumentation and a fresh voice to classic swing repertoire. The group plays a range of material, focusing mainly on swing music à la Duke Ellington, but also branching into jazz manouche and even bebop.

Our August schedule is here 💫

With events running through most weeks and the occasional double feature, we’ve begun another action-packed month. We’re starting off this evening with a baritone sax triple act, Triple Treat, and then we will hear the Miro Holland Group’s next phase 🎷🔮

Jug bands, bands of friends, jazz bands... Of course, a month at Undercurrent wouldn’t be complete without some poetry (Ubuntu; Still Not Dead), open mics (Poetry; Wellington Calling) and folk (Blair Morgan & Luca Joass). Join us also for our weekly Sunday Jazz and biweekly Swing Jazz Jams 🎸🥁

Come meditate with us on Wednesdays at 5 or come Wed-Sunday to enjoy the warm atmosphere and range of books 🌿📖

We’ll see you at the Undercurrent! 💃

This Sunday presents the Fritz Wollner Trio!

For this one Fritz Wollner is teaming up with stalwart rhythm section of Daniel Yeabsley and Mark Lockett to play a selection of Fritz’s favourite Jazz Standards. Fritz, who has been living in New Zealand for 40 years, raising a family and teaching at Wellington High School, is coming back to performing music after a long break. He has performed with various groups around Wellington in the last 30 years before the job of Head of Music at WHS had taken too much time and energy. In retirement he has spent an increasing amount of time getting back to his own musical development, enjoying every minute of it, and is now ready to share his passion with an audience again.

The first gig at the Undercurrent in May was well received by a full house. People commented on the Trio’s melodic and spacious approach to the timeless classics. This one sees them back with a new set of favourites.

As always, we are selling a range of refreshing drinks!

We still have our complimentary cheese crackers (we put the cheese on the crackers so you don’t have to do it) and tea and coffee, and of course...books available for purchase.

We hope to see you there! ⭐️

The Undercurrent presents Blair Morgan & Luca Joass!

Ōtautahi singer-songwriter Blair Morgan brings his original songs to Wellington for a special afternoon performance. Blair’s recently released album Sunday River blends folk, Americana and indie influences, telling stories of people, places and journeys. His songs travel from the streets of Lisbon to the west coast of Te Waipounamu, exploring themes of resilience, friendship and home through warm acoustic performances, and engaging storytelling. Performing solo, Blair presents the songs as they were first written- just voice, guitar, harmonica and the stories behind them.

Joining Blair is Wellington singer-songwriter Luca Joass. Known for his heartfelt songwriting and engaging live performances, Luca released his debut single “Young & Free” last year, accompanied by a beautifully crafted music video. As co-founder of Neato Productions, he has also directed several music videos for Blair’s Sunday River album.

Come along for an afternoon of original New Zealand songwriting in one of Wellington’s most welcoming listening rooms.

The Undercurrent presents Sister Madly & Friends!

Sister Madly is a not-too-serious, part-time band of old and new friends brought together by Scott Pilgrim to celebrate 20 years in Aotearoa. The band will perform a hand-picked collection of songs that soundtrack Scott’s years in Melbourne and his early life in New Zealand.

Supporting the evening is a wonderful ensemble of friends—Tom Kane, Polly Johnson, Beans, Martin Andrews, Don Mackay and Darrel Greaney. Each is a talented songwriter, and together they’ll perform an intimate in the round set, sharing songs and stories.

This promises to be a warm, intimate, and wonderfully cosy evening of music and friendship. We’d love you to come along and help celebrate Scott’s 20 years of calling Aotearoa home.
