Artist Showcase: Beth McMillan

Beth's work is pure charm from every angle. Working with driftwood, pebbles, and paint, she builds whimsical little scenes — vases of wildflowers perched on beachcombed wood, tiny painted birds nesting in bare winter trees, a red-sailed boat bobbing through dotted blue waves, and a signpost pointing the way to Paraparaumu, Kāpiti Island, and Rimu Road, surrounded by scattered stones.

Her swirl-pattern cats are a particular delight — intricate, almost lace-like linework that turns a simple silhouette into something mesmerising. Elsewhere, clusters of hand-painted eggs and shell-like forms in warm golds and purples bring a touch of the coast indoors.

Playful, tactile, and full of personality, Beth's pieces are perfect for anyone drawn to art with a sense of humour and heart — and a distinctly local flavour.

Artist Showcase: Sam Rodgers

Sam's series "Inner Circles" explores the meeting point of cosmic symbolism, spirituality, and human emotion through vibrant abstraction. Fiery reds, radiant yellows, and deep blues layer into dynamic, richly textured compositions, anchored by recurring circular forms, radiating lines, and celestial imagery — suns, moons, cosmic wheels — that invite quiet contemplation of energy, transformation, and connection.

Blending organic mark-making with geometric structure, Sam's paintings sit somewhere between movement and stillness, inviting you to journey inward and find your own sense of wonder.

Artist Spotlight - Jenny Pritchard

Jenny Pritchard joins us with a beautiful series of watercolours capturing the New Zealand landscape — coastlines, mountain passes, tussock and blooming florals rendered with a soft, confident touch. Painting has been a lifelong ambition Jenny finally pursued in retirement, and she's drawn again and again to the purity and unpredictability of watercolour, letting the water run with the paint to see where it leads. She's spent the last seven years as part of the Kapiti Arts Trail, and has had two paintings exhibited at the new Toi Mahara Gallery.

A lovely collection for anyone who loves our local scenery translated into paint.

Artist Spotlight - Judi Lapsley Miller
We're thrilled to welcome back Judi Lapsley Miller, Artist to our walls! Based in Wellington and inspired by conservation work at nearby Zealandia EcoSanctuary, Judi turns her wildlife photography into luminous photo-art, alongside mixed-media and watercolour pieces. From a Fantail caught mid-flight through cherry blossoms to a soulful owl gazing straight out of the frame, each bird feels less like a subject and more like a companion — its own personality, its own quiet corner of the landscape, held in soft, dreamlike light.

Judi is also one half of TinyArt, a collaboration with framer Chris Helliwell of Edges Art + Framing — archival fine art prints in bespoke frames, upcycled from offcuts that would otherwise go to waste. These tiny, one-of-a-kind pieces make a lovely gift (or treat for yourself), and many include a 10% artist donation to wildlife.

If you love wildlife art that's equal parts detail and emotion, come see Judi's collection in person.

📸 Meet the Photographer: Sally Weatherley
This week we're delighted to feature Sally Weatherley, whose three beautiful pieces in our "Focus on Photography" exhibition at Vintage Village Café bring our "Meet the Photographer" series to a wonderful close.
Sally's collection showcases a photographer with a remarkable talent for capturing New Zealand's wildlife and landscapes at their most breathtaking. Kererū in Flight is simply stunning — our beloved native wood pigeon captured mid-takeoff, its magnificent wings fully spread and glowing with warm golden and iridescent blue tones against a lush dark green bush backdrop. Every individual feather is crisp and detailed, the red beak vivid, the sheer power and beauty of this treasured bird frozen in a single perfect moment. It's the kind of image that takes your breath away. Here's Looking at You is an equally arresting wildlife portrait — a Buller's albatross photographed face-on in extraordinary close-up, its commanding yellow-tipped beak and striking dark-rimmed eyes filling the frame against a deep blue sky, wings outstretched. It's bold, confident, and utterly captivating.
Last Light rounds out Sally's collection with a gorgeous coastal scene — golden and amber clouds reflected in the rippling wet sand of a beach at dusk, boulders silhouetted in the shallows, hills and mountains fading into the darkening sky beyond. It's a deeply peaceful and beautiful image, a perfect note on which to end.
Come and see Sally's work in person at Vintage Village Café, 2A Raumati Road, Raumati Village — on display until 27th July. All artwork is available to purchase. ☕

📸 Meet the Photographer: Mark Frickleton
This week we're featuring the work of Mark Frickleton, whose three extraordinary pieces in our "Focus on Photography" exhibition at Vintage Village Café are guaranteed to stop you in your tracks.
Mark has a passion for capturing the sky in its most dramatic and powerful moods. Sunset Before Storm 1 opens his collection with a breathtaking blaze of colour — the entire sky transformed into a canvas of deep crimson, orange and violet, a dark hill silhouette cutting across the horizon as the last of the light burns intensely behind it. It's raw and elemental. Sunset Before Storm 2 takes that drama even further — brooding dark clouds, heavy and turbulent, are dramatically backlit by a fierce slash of orange light that tears across the frame, the approaching storm palpable in every corner of the image. Two sunsets, two completely different moods, and both utterly compelling.
Then Iceberg at Sunrise takes us to an entirely different world — a slender spire of ancient ice rises from the still, mirror-calm waters of Antarctica, its sculpted surface glowing softly in the early morning light, a massive ice wall looming behind it. It's a humbling, breathtaking image — a reminder of the extraordinary scale and fragility of our natural world.
Come and see Mark's work in person at Vintage Village Café, 2A Raumati Road, Raumati Village — on display until 27th July. All artwork is available to purchase. ☕
