Departing Palmerston North on the return journey to Pahiatua on RM31 “Tokomaru”. The diesel sound as it accelerates up to speed is iconic and many people will remember it. Note the ‘Capital Connection’ passenger set on the left, waiting for the first commuter run to Wellington on Monday morning.

This Standard railcar was built in 1938 at the Hutt railway workshops and restored by the Pahiatua Railcar Society Inc

This was a great day trip and we hope to do more in future.

Feilding and District Steam Rail Society operated its Matariki Winter Express this evening, carrying passengers in an illuminated car along the Feilding yards. In the background, you can hear the burbling of diesel Standard railcar RM31 “Tokomaru”, waiting at Feilding station to make the return trip to Pahiatua.

About to embark on an excursion from Pahiatua to Feilding on RM31 “Tokomaru”. This Standard railcar was built in 1938 at the Hutt railway workshops and restored by the Pahiatua Railcar Society Inc. And a fabulous job they have done!

The European Model Railway Club (Manawatu) layout is a great feature at any train show. Seen here at the Hawkes Bay Model Train Show 2026 in Hastings, this layout has some incredible detail and moving parts. It’s always fun to spot little things that others might miss.
