Don't hate. Educate.

There are 180+ languages in the Philippines. Tagalog, Cebuano, Hiligaynon, Masbatenyo, Tausug, Maranao and other Philippine "dialects" that we know are actual/real/legitimate languages.

Dialects are variations of these languages (e.g. Tagalog-Bataan, Tagalog-Batangas, Cebuano-Davao, etc.).

EDIT:
The distinction between language and dialect is crucial in the Philippine context. Other Philippine languages haven’t been properly recognized and dismissed as merely dialects in the past, hence, efforts have been dedicated to only Tagalog and English. The term “dialect” proved to be disadvantageous for other PH languages.

So, label your languages properly.

Today I’d like to share and highlight some of the work by Gabriela Aotearoa NZ - a grassroots organisation of Filipino women in Aotearoa New Zealand fighting for gender equality, freedom, and national democracy for the Philippines 🇵🇭💪🏼

Wednesday 1 May was May Day or International Workers’ Day – a celebration of working people and a day when people campaign for decent work and fair pay.

On this day, reaffirmed their commitment to upholding workers’ rights as they marched in solidarity with hundreds of workers in Aotearoa, and millions more around the world.

The official statement from Gabriela Aotearoa NZ says, “There are currently 7,000+ Filipino migrant women living in Aotearoa, and 19% of them work in low-paid industries with poor working conditions, such as hospitality, cleaning, teaching, and retail.”

“The New Zealand coalition government, less than a year since its election, has introduced harmful policies against workers. An example of this was when they repealed the Fair Pay Agreements legislation.”

“The fight for women’s rights is intricately linked to the pursuit of safe, decent, and secured work with liveable wages that allow for workers to thrive and live with dignity.”

Very excited to see this today.

I haven’t seen many workshops/resources etc available that are targeted to the Filipino community in New Zealand, regardless of the topic.

This is an initiative from a District Health Board and therefore likely to be government funded.

Amazing 🤩

This workshop will be conducted in English and Tagalog.

💙 Please share within your healthcare community for the Filipino Community 💚

MEKENI is short film presenting an authentic Filipino immigrant story. This is the first time a film has been made featuring the Kapampángan language in Aotearoa New Zealand, which is an incredible feat in itself!

I’m not gonna lie, this film will make you feel all the feels. MEKENI is a story about family, unconditional love, and grief. An unexpected encounter connects a Filipino-Kiwi daughter and her migrant father, causing them to confront their ongoing grief in the face of impending further loss.

This film transported me directly into a Filipino household of today, and in doing so reminded me of my own childhood as the daughter of a Filipina migrant, and the challenges we faced.

A huge thank you to Te & Kuya Collaborative for their work in the representation of the Filipino-Kiwi narrative 🙏
