Remember the Armenians is a new Pōneke-based rōpū and tonight, 25/7 at 6pm, they are celebrating with a night of Armenian poetry and music at 6.30pm L4/99 Willis Street, Te Aro.
On our shelves we happen to have two Armenian poets: Razmik Davoyan & Diana Der-Hovanessian. We also have one old copy of 'The 40 Days' by Franz Werfel. It's a 1933 novel based on events that took place in 1915, during the second year of World War I and at the beginning of the Armenian genocide.

We like 'critters', so when we heard RNZ Afternoons with Jesse Mulligan asking what critters we'd like featured as this year's celebration of critters, we gathered novels with critters on the covers: insects and bugs of all sorts, including butterflies, flies, ants, bugs and more. Plus, we got together some non-fiction and also a copy of the wonderful 'Scratching for a Living. The Bugman Reflects on his Creepy Crawlie Friends' by Ruud Kleinpaste.
Critters are cool!

It's Bastille Day, so here's a range of fiction & non-fiction about that time in history: two old classics are Victor Hugo's 'Les Miserables', an old Whitcombe's Story Books edition of Dicken's 'A Tale Of Two Cities', & more modern books are 'City Of Darkness, City Of Light' by Marge Piercy, 'The Last Banquet' by Jonathan Grimwood, & 'Confessions Of Marie Antoinette' by Juliet Grey.
On the non-fiction side we have books by Mark Traugott, Leo Gershoy, Archibald Robertson, Edmund Burke, J. H. Shennan, and John Paxton.

It's great to see the NZ Wars Collection podcast on RNZ, the latest is 'Stories of Waerenga-a-Hika'. Books that may interest you also include Vincent O'Malley's 'The New Zealand Wars | Ngā Pakanga O Aotearoa', 'A History Of Queen's Redoubt And The Invasion Of The Waikato' by Ian Barton & Neville Ritchie, and 'Fragments From a Contested Past: Remembrance, Denial And New Zealand History' by Joanna Kidman, Liana MacDonald, Vincent O'Malley, Tom Roa & Keziah Wallis - the title of the BWB book speaks for itself, understanding the stories of this country is crucial. It’s world chocolate day today, so here’s a few chocolatey books that we have in the shop - novels and a biography with chocolate in the title, plus a couple of chocolate cooking books!
If you want to know about the reality behind the politics and power of chocolate though, some good books to look out for include: ‘Cocoa’ by Kristy Leissle, ‘Chocolate on Trial’ by Lowell J. Satre. Sadly, neither are in stock at the moment.

Here’s a selection of ‘home’ themed books to match our event tomorrow.
On Thursday 25 June at 6.30pm, Stacey Teague, Becs Tetley, Mary McCallum, and Janis Freegard will be at Book Haven to tell us what “feeling at home” means to them. The event runs for approximately an hour but we’ll be keeping the doors open late so you can squeeze some book browsing in afterwards. Do come along.

20 June is World Refugee Day. The theme is ‘Until Everyone is Safe’, but just a few days ago the EU Pact on Migration & Asylum came into force stopping the right to asylum if you arrive by sea in Europe, then on Wednesday the EU Parliament passed an anti-migrant bill & right-wingers chanted ‘send them back’. Here in Aotearoa we‘ve had the extreme hateful comments from Tamaki talking of purging & burning. Comments creating fear and hatred.
