Narrowing down the chem options for Madagascar ragwort. This non replicated 6 treatment site is off Sand Hills Road, Awanui. All mature plants at this site.

We have been asked about how our Madagascar Ragwort broadcast chemical application trial is going in recent weeks.

Results have been slow, due to the cold weather and nature of some of the chemistry and plant. More time is still required for some herbicides.

There are some positive results starting to emerge, with some surprises.

With this w**d not being on any herbicide label in NZ at this time and many of the herbicides trialled not having a label for use over pasture in NZ, we will not be publicy providing any efficacy results on the Madagascar ragwort. However, we are actively working with some of our chemical suppliers, which may change this.

I can say that the triclopyr/picloram plots had the greatest effect on the kikuyu. With metsulfuron and other oil combinations also noticable.

We recently undertook a trial to identify Madagascar Ragwort control options. This is a 13 treatment trial looking at both large and seedling plants. We are looking forward to seeing and sharing the results. We also added in the kikuyu effect as a measure as this is a significant negative issue with spraying on this farm.

Nice looking Triticale, which is growing well from an Autumn sowing. The intention is a silage cut later in spring. The flexibility of the cut/grazing timing while maintaining high yield and quality is the benefit over other cereals and annual ryegrass in this situation.

Alligator w**d is a real problem w**d in Northland, and getting worse. Taking up valuable space in pasture and at times can poison livestock.
We recently created a trial area to determine the effectiveness of different herbicides that can be used across pasture. Results will be available shortly.
