This site, dating back to the Eleventh Century, continues to grow in size - and therefore importance - with its third major discovery in the last two years.

Using new methods, including remote sensing, a two-meter-thick stone wall foundation has been discovered buried outside of the historic Selja monastery by NIKU archaeologists.

Where the Battle of Cynuit, fought in England in 878, between Vikings & Saxons, took place has long been debated, but new research is shifting preference to the site of Castle Hill, in Devon.
The battle was crucial to the hopes of Wessex survival, at the time. The war was going against Alfred (later the Great) and after a string of defeats. He had retreated into the Somerset marshes to regroup and the unexpected, decisive defeat of the small Viking army of 23 ships, under Ubba Ragnarsson, by local Saxon forces, was a huge morale boost for Alfred’s men, combining as it did, the death of Ubba and the capture of a supposedly magical Viking standard.
There is still no genuine evidence of Castle Hill as being definitely the battle site, but there is hope that permission for an archaeological dig might provide that proof.
