The construction of the Corinth Canal started in 1882 and finished in 1893. Its goal was to create a shortcut between the Gulf of Corinth and the Saronic Gulf. This would save ships from taking a long and dangerous route around the Peloponnese peninsula.

At first, a French company, the Société Internationale du Canal Maritime de Corinthe, was given the job of building the canal. However, it faced many problems, including difficult land conditions and financial troubles. Around 2,000 workers were involved, and they had to deal with challenges like landslides from the steep canal walls and strong winds that made navigation tricky.

Even with these difficulties, the canal—6.4 kilometers long and 21.3 meters wide—was finished after 11 years of hard work. Though it is too narrow for many modern ships, it is still an impressive engineering achievement and a notable historical waterway.
