Released on 24 October 1980, Organisation — the second studio album by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) — marked a bold evolution in the band’s sound and artistic identity.
Recorded under Dindisc Records, it was the first OMD album to feature an external producer, with Mike Howlett (formerly of Gong) guiding the sessions. It also saw Malcolm Holmes join as a full-time drummer, adding a live rhythmic pulse to the band’s signature synth textures.
Darker and more atmospheric than their debut, Organisation reflected the chilly melancholy of early-’80s Britain — a fusion of post-punk austerity and electronic beauty. Its mood and tone were deeply influenced by Joy Division and the industrial landscapes of the time, resulting in one of OMD’s most haunting works.
The album became the band’s first UK Top 10 success, reaching No. 6 on the Albums Chart, while its sole single, “Enola Gay,” rose to No. 8, cementing OMD’s place in the vanguard of synth-pop innovation.
Remastered and reissued in 2003 with bonus tracks, Organisation remains a timeless document of technology meeting emotion — a melancholic masterpiece that continues to resonate across generations.
