Your purpose in life is firstly to develop the potential that God has placed in you, then 2ndly to serve your community using that talent. An education encourages reading and arithmetic. We mistakenly attribute how good we are at reading and writing to our talent. While it may be true in some instances, the reading, writing, and arithmetic skills are tools to help you better understand and apply your talent. Your true potential can only be released through introspection and experience aka trial and error. That is why wise people say fail forward and fast. Only then will you discover what comes naturally to you so you can develop it to better serve your community.

We were a bunch of misfit. All together we looked like the discounted box of rejects. Just odds and ends. Missing parts, broken, cracked, damaged, ruined. The dirty and ruggedly were the best of the bad lot that we were - all the pieces intact but coated with years of dirt and grime – so thick, you could slice with a butter knife. Maybe it was a joke. Maybe it was an experiment. Maybe it was just life being life when we all got tossed into the box. Carelessly, without thought. Indeed there was no order, just chaotic bits and pieces that did not seem to fit.

The Lutheran Church was in existence for over 3 centuries by the time it arrived on the shores of Papua New Guinea (PNG) in the late 1800. PNG was a dark and unknown place at the turn of the century – tribal fights, sorcery, payback killing were common. Isolated in their own little worlds, Papua New Guineans were animists, believing that spirits controlled their life.

The gospel arrived with Reverend Johannes Flierl, a Neuendettelsau Missionary from the Kingdom of Bavaria, Germany. The gospel in PNG began in the Finschhafen and Madang area and spread into the rest of Papua New Guinea. As it was in the days of Luther, the gospel liberated people from the fear of the unknown and freed multitudes from the power of spirits and death.

Hank Nelson was an educator in PNG from the years 1966 to 1972. He taught at the PNG Admin college (now Institute if Public Admin ) then UPNG. Nelson returned to Australia in 1972.

This 1972 publication is a study of PNG as an emerging nation. This body of work is also a critical assessment of the first term of PNG as an independent Nation.

An enlightening read.
