He was lost and disoriented, barely a month old. His whiskers had been cut and singed. His paws were seared and cracked from walking on the hot pavement. When we found him, it was raining and he was going back and forth on the highway, unable to get his bearings. We had to take him off the road. He is the seventh in our present clowder of puspins (pusang Pinoy), all of whom we rescued as kittens i
n various degrees of risk. We have rescued and sheltered over 20 puspins in the last six years. There are more out there needing help. Countless stray cats and dogs die yearly from malnutrition, disease, maltreatment, and accident. While concern for our furry friends is on the rise, many people are still unaware of the basics of animal welfare. There is a need to control their swelling numbers, and some in the private sector have undertaken TNR (trap-neuter-release) programs in their communities to augment the efforts of organized animal welfare groups. But there are not enough of them. Government assistance has been minimal, although there are more cities now offering free rabies shots and free neutering services in a limited capacity. Some LGUs are willing to render more services but funds are simply not available. KAWABASA is our modest attempt to help. Inspired by Marky's favorite food (kalabasa), KAWABASA offers earthy and affordable items in an eclectic, funky mix. You don't have to be a furparent to like our goods, though if you are one, chances are you'll love them. There's something cool here for everyone. What's coolest is that part of our proceeds will support the Philippine Animal Rescue Team (PART) in its efforts to rescue, shelter, and nurture at risk animals. We hope you'll enjoy browsing our site. Please stay a while and meet our clowder. If something catches your eye, grab it! If what you want isn't here, drop us a line and maybe we can do something about it. Each item you purchase gives a fur-friend more of the help it needs. Love and nurture go a long way. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 13:13)
