Smart Energy and Better Systems at Work in a Local Dressing Plant
Chickenoro Inc., a dressed chicken manufacturer in Brgy. Talotog, Murcia, has officially modernized its operations to improve efficiency and reduce overhead costs. By partnering with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) through the Negros Occidental Provincial Science and Technology Office, the company is utilizing high-impact technologies to solve two common industrial challenges: rising electricity prices and delivery tracking gaps.
Under the SETUP 4.0 Innovation-Enabling Fund (iFund), the plant integrated a grid-tied solar photovoltaic system to power its energy-intensive poultry processing. Because food safety standards require equipment like screw chillers, steam boilers, and industrial ice makers to operate continuously, energy consumption often spikes during peak production. The new solar setup supplements the power supply and includes mobile monitoring, allowing the operations team to track energy generation and real-time savings. Under the net-metering program, any excess power produced is exported back to the grid.
Simultaneously, the company has been enhancing its delivery processes. Like many expanding businesses, it encounters challenges related to fuel management, route discrepancies, and a lack of visibility in delivery operations. To solve this challenge, a mobile digital recording system equipped with GPS and fuel monitoring has been implemented. This system delivers real-time insights into the routes taken, driving habits, idle periods, and fuel usage. With access to this information, management can closely oversee trips, pinpoint irregularities, and refine planning for upcoming deliveries.
Chickenoro’s partnership with DOST spans more than a decade. Earlier support in 2010 and 2017 enhanced its processing operations through semi-automation. This upgrade helped the company maintain its certification from the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) and achieve a processing capacity of approximately 1,500 to 2,500 birds per hour.
