After marriage, your middle name should always remain your mother’s maiden surname.
So why do many women suddenly move their father’s surname into the middle name after marriage? 🤔 That’s actually incorrect under Philippine law.
📑 Civil Code & Family Code of the Philippines
📑 Legal Basis:
Article 370 of the Civil Code of the Philippines states:
“A married woman may use her maiden first name and surname and add her husband’s surname, or she may use her maiden first name and her husband’s surname, or she may use her husband’s full name, but prefixing a word indicating that she is his wife.”
This means your middle name (mother’s maiden surname) stays intact — only your last name changes when you adopt your husband’s surname.
• Your middle name = your mother’s maiden surname (this never changes).
• Your surname = your father’s surname before marriage, and if you adopt your husband’s surname, this part changes to his.
👉 Example:
• Before marriage: Shiela Miraran Cabanero
• After marriage (adopting husband’s surname): Shiela Miraran Cosileng
(Miraran stays, Cabanero is replaced by Cosileng) and not Shiela Cabanero Cosileng. Confusing right? Why suddenly remove your Middle name? It doesn’t make sense at all!!!
