The book is a chronicle of Philippine History, focusing on both the military and spiritual aspects of the conquest as gleaned from the records of a pioneer 17th century Augustinian friar and those who followed in their succeeding missions.
It is a richly detailed work, filled with observations on early Philippine costumes, burial practices and babaylan rituals. It contains the earliest written record of the Filipino creation myth explaining the origin of the first man and woman. Regarded by T.H. Pardo de Tavera as the “most interesting” of the Spanish chronicles, it was acknowledged by Rizal as an important historical source.
