The Cover Page of José Rizal’s Trial Records (1896)

This document is the cover page of the official Spanish military trial records against Dr. José Rizal, pre. It formally opened the case against Rizal on December 2, 1896, charging him with rebellion, sedition, and illegal association.

Spanish colonial authorities alleged that his nationalist writings- particularly Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo- and his founding of La Liga Filipina had inspired the Philippine Revolution, despite the absence of evidence that he directly participated in the armed uprising.

The case was investigated under the authority of the Captaincy General of the Philippines by Captain Rafael Domínguez García.

The trial proceeded with extraordinary speed: Rizal was tried on December 26, 1896, sentenced to death on December 28 and executed at Bagumbayan on December 30, 1896.

Historians generally regard the proceedings as a political trial, citing the limited time granted for Rizal’s defense and the apparent determination of the colonial government to secure his conviction.
