On this day in 1898, the Philippines proclaimed its independence from Spanish colonial rule, ending more than three centuries of colonization. ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ

Yet the Philippine Declaration of Independence was more than a political milestone. It was the culmination of a mass revolutionary movement shaped by the aspirations and sacrifices of countless Filipinos. While it marked the end of Spanish rule, the revolutionโ€™s goals would soon be challenged by new forms of foreign intervention and colonial domination, reminding us that the struggle for genuine national freedom was and is far from over.

Here are some recommended readings that explore the lives, ideas, and struggles of the revolutionaries and the Revolution as a whole. They invite us to view this pivotal chapter of Philippine history through the perspective of a people striving for self-determination and nationhood, rather than mere colonial subjects, and to reflect on the continuing quest for liberation and nationhood. โœŠ

๐˜ผ๐™ง๐™ ๐™ž๐™ฅ๐™š๐™ก๐™–๐™œ๐™ค by Januar Yap, and translated from Cebuano into Filipino by Hanna A. Leceรฑa, is a fantastical and dizzying journey into the complexities of the Philippines, through a colorful cast of comical charactersโ€”each embodying a facet of the nationโ€™s history and politicsโ€”the novel balances storytelling, humor, and philosophical inquiry. In doing so, it invites its readers to grapple with the reality of a country shaped by political turmoil, recurring natural disasters, and the lingering effects of colonialism.

From the blurb: โ€œPeoples, islands, seas, historiesโ€”no matter how great or smallโ€”each one of us make up this enigmatic archipelago: where do we come from, where are we now, and where are we going?โ€

Through poetry, Arvin Abejo Mangohig illuminates the realities of the Philippines in 2016 in their book ๐™๐™ค๐™ ๐™๐™–๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™‰๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ, moving from intimate portraits of everyday injustices to the broader violence of the war on drugs.

Ten years later, as questions of accountability, remembrance, and justice remain contested, these poems stand as vital archives of the atrocities of the Oplan Tokhang and the Philippine Drug War. More than acts of remembrance, they urge the nation to awaken from the comforts of complacency and to pursue justice for the state violence and culture of complicity that defines the Drug War.
